semi slick mtb tyres

Can anyone recomend me some semi slick type mtb tyres, suitable for light off road such as towpaths/fire roads and tarmac.

I have Scwalbe Land Cruisers and I'm setting off for the C2C in the morning. They're ok actually, roll well on tarmac and off road they seem OK, will have a better idea after the weekend. They are quite heavy...

They're the only slicks i have so nothing to compare them against, seem OK, I just wanted cheap as possible at the time of buying.

The schwalbe land cruisers look just the job, lots of favourable reviews about on and off road performance despite being a bit heavy, but thats reflected in the bargain price! Worth a punt i reckon. Gotta make for a better on road ride than my current nobblys.

I had a set on last summer and they show almost no wear. roll really well with much better puncture protection than something like the Kojaks I had on before

I put some land cruisers on my old hardtail a yr or so ago - I've been very impressed with both on and off road performance. The bike wasn't being used after i bought a full-sus but now gets a lot more use!! For the money you can't go wrong

I bought some schwalbe land cruisers from the absolute cycles ebay store, £22.95 for a pair including postage and delivered the next day! Absolute pain in the ar53 to fit but they're on now and after a quick spin up an down the street they definately roll nice and smooth on the road. Hope to do a decent ride on them tomorrow.

Did the C2C on the land Cruisers... very good! They coped well with flood water over the hubs, rolled well on tarmac, coped with the gravel on the old coach road and were spot on the the waskerly way and the line into Sunderland. I'm happy with them! 140 miles, one puncture due to a half inch long thorn! Other than that, faultless.

Well I did a 64km ride on Saturday with the Land Cruisers. Managed to average 22.5km/hr mainly on road which is probably the highest average speed that I've ever done so they get a thumbs up for that. In the last hour of the ride it started raining quite heavily and they performed well with the benefit that the amount of spray they threw up was much less than from my usual knobblies.

Continental Travel Contact.

I used Landcruisers for a bit, the Conti's are better in every respect if you ride mainly road/ fire trails/ canal paths, etc. They are much faster.

For the price though, the Landcruisers are pretty good. Glad you like 'em.

ok this was a long time ago but it's still being read (I did!)


I looked up the conti travel contact comparison - and found the conti to not come up as good, e.g. this review from the net :-

My daughter has these and I use Continental Travel Contact. There is nothing between them on the road (I thought the Continentals would be quicker but if anything the Schwalbes are a little faster). Off road the Schwalbe tyres are way superior, I have been sliding around on the Continentals while she keeps going. Once you get into deep sticky mud then both struggle. Haven't had any punctures with either tyre and have pulled shome sharp objects out of both.

I will probably get the Schwalbes when mine wear out, but after a year of use neither are showing any signs of wear.

I personally have the land cruiser - and have used them for pretty aggressive xc off road - (e.g. rivington pike, the peak district rocky descents, and delamere forest in the worse of mud) - and it performed well for a tyre that rolls as well as it does.

obviously it's not as grippy as a proper nobbly tyre - if it were - it would be the best selling tyre in the world. but it's not too far off. you can get through anything xc / black runs - but just have to watch your speed on tech sections / corners. in the club i ride i find i can outpace riders that my lack experience easily in this tyre in most off road situations (i.e.e proper off road rides in the peaks / macc forest). i leave them on all the time - as I also ride a lot on road to get about as bike is my transport too

Also used the travel contacts for a while, they are a great compromise between road tyres that retain some off road ability
