Best place to buy second hand

Hi guys
Fairly new to it all really although I have been riding since I was about 4. I've just got to the stage where I have realised the difference between a substandard bike and a proper bike. After having the halfords £200 jobbies all my life I am in search of a decent second hand up to £3/400. MTB hardtail preferably.

My question is above really. Where is the best place to buy second hand. Are there any big reputable dealers that deal in 2nd hand stock. Most online don't mention anything, they seem to deal with the brand new stuff.

The big chains don't bother, and it's rare for the smaller, decent shops to do so either: too much hassle, and too many, shall we say..."hot"...bikes out there. eBay and singletrackworld as suggested are your best bets.
