I'm hoping for a bit of advise here really, I ride a cannondale caad10 and just this morning on my commute to work it's developed a bearing type cracking noise whilst pedaling.
It appears to be coming from the bottom bracket, but i,ve done less than 1000 miles on this bike and it's a BB30 bottom bracket, i wouldn't expect to have any issues with this yet! I've tried different pedals so it's not them!
Is the bottom bracket servicable and should i strip it down and grease it?
I did a 55 mile bike ride yesterday and the roads were wet so i'm wondering if there has been some water ingress.

Any help much appreciated!!

If you're over 25 it's your knees.

Joking apart, you often get creaking from splined interface cranks. Take the arms off, give them a clean and grease or copper slip the splines and see if it stops.

Failing that, whip the bearings out and give them a clean and re-grease and if that fails some new bearings might be needed. External BBs don't last very long.

Before stripping the BB

Check that the chainring bolts are tight.

As you push on the pedals you put strain through the seatpost/seat, pull on the bars etc etc.

Tighten everything else up including your cleats if you have clipped in feet. If still noisy then delve deeper in the BB

1000 miles is just about right for all the other "nuts and bolts" to be loose.

Worth checking your chainring bolts are tight and the threads and interfaces clean before you tackle the bottom bracket.

Ah, the dreaded cracking. Experience tells me it'll be the bottom bracket. Not had a BB30 which should be better as you point out, but I have gone through them in no time as all BBs appear to be made of cheese these days!

As mentioned above, seat/seatpost has often found to be the source of a phantom creak.

Hmmmm. Doubt it, but easily checked. Get out the saddle. If it's still there it won't be your seatpin.

Thanks chaps, Took the chain rings off and cleaned the mating surfaces, 2 of the bolts were looser than the other's but nothing significant, span the crank up and got the noise to sound so it was definitely the BB, seems with the chain rings off it would do it stationary where as before it would only do it whilst pedaling lightly.
Anyway, took the crank out and cleaned all of the contact surfaces and re-assembled noise is now gone!

Thank you for your advise.smile

My Scott S30 did exactly the same thing during the L2B this year, drove me nuts and was worried about where the noise was coming from the whole distance. Mine too has done less than 1000 miles, nearer to 700. Took it back to Evans as its still under warranty and from the looks of it they have stripped it out and re greased. Not ridden it properly yet due to the bad weather at the weekend but all seemed fine during a short test run.

Am I to expect this to happen often or is it a one off as the bike is newish?
