Removing gear leaver cable from a gear shifter!

Don't post in this section regularly, but may start to do, as i'm using my bike a lot atm.The
Basicly i'm stuck as per title, i'm changing a gear shifter, and need to take the gear shift lever out of the gear leaver, so I can remove it.
How do I do it.
Obviously it dependeds on the type of shifter, so i'll try get a picture of the shifter now.
Would really appricate any help guys.

Very similar to this, but perhaps a year or two older.(plastic covering the circular bit)

To remove the cable you would undo it from the derailleur and then pull it through, if that's what you are asking?
You can't remove the cable from the lever without disconnecting it from the other end.

How do I get it to come loose though, so I can take the gear shifter off the bike?

There would normally be enough slack to remove the lever with cable still attached...

I think we may need diagrams to avoid confusion!

Sorry i've worded it bad/ i'm confused and have no idea.
I need to disconect/take the cable out of the gear shifter.
So I can remove it completly from the bike...

I've removed the lever and the cable is still attached!
Although I don't want it to be!

No, not yet.
Still confused as how that will allow the wire to come free.from the gear shifter...
But looking like i'll have to put the gear leaver back together and re-fit for now, and i'll work on taking it off sunday.
(Have two bikes with the gear leaver/break pull combo detached from the handle bar's).

If you have disconnected it from the derailleur you should have the cable and the shifter together. To remove the cable from the shifter if you were to turn the lever in the picture upside down there should be a plastic cross head screw somewhere that would be in line with where the cable enters the shifter. If it is the rear shifter if you select top gear (smallest gear) you should be able to see the nipple of the cable through this hole. It is now a case of just pushing it through and pulling it out. If it is the front shift select the smallest gear and do the same.

surely the simplest way is to undo the two little cross-head screws in the pic, remove the casing and then you can see the mechanism and the end of the cable - thats what I do on the bikes I service!

Yeah, you're right khushy.....I just checked my wife's bike which has exactly the same brake lever / gear shifter combo, and as far as I can see the only way to get into the mechanism is to remove the two little screws and take the casing off. It doesn't have the same plastic grub screw set up that a stand alone shifter has.

This is correct. All will become clear once the cover is removed.
