Mountain Bike - Upgrade or New?

I have a Specialised hard rock sport disk 2010 which I've had a few years. Very much an entry level mountain bike.
Recently I've been riding to work (20mile around trip) where possible and started thinking very much along the lines of getting a road bike, however all change as I went out with some colleagues for a ride on Friday and really enjoyed getting muddy and the varying terrain which has made me change my view again to looking at getting a better mountain bike. In particular I struggled to match their speed downhill as they all had full suspension bikes.
Anyway to the point.. I would like to learn more about how to look after my bike and quite fancy a project to upgrade it. Is it worthwhile or should I just buy a new bike? Looking on ebay and I can see quite a few full suspension frames. Along with a new set of forks I would have thought that would give my bike a new lease of life or am I wasting time?

I would go down the new bike route if i am honest, partly to ensure you buy a good overall setup and partly as components sold separately can cost significantly more.
I have done both and enjoyed putting the time into selecting the right components but I believe its normally better value to buy a complete new bike.
Regarding the road bike option I recently bought a specialised allez and the effort required to cover distances on road is stunning compared with an MTB.
However I sold up within 9 months as its just wasn't as fun as my MTB and it only take one pot hole to have you clear off the bike....

OP: nowt wrong wi' Hardrocks. Seem them embarrass riders on FS bikes numerous times. As has been said, don't bother spending ££££££££ upgrading everything: it gets expensive for moderate gains. If you really want to, then opt for SH bits off eBay and STW: set of RS Rebas, some LX/XT/Hope XC hubb'd wheels on reasonable rims (717s/719s etc) shouldn't set you back too much.
If you want to go fast, ride more and ride harder. And buy a road bike, and learn to smash them on the climbs: they can't descend when their lungs are wrapped around the handlebars and their legs reduced to jelly

I'm also looking at the possibility of an allez as my first road bike. Sorry to deter the original thread OP but personally i would just upgrade to a new bike!

The Allez seemed to me a great road bike and I tested a few at that price point.Sorry to deter the original thread OP but personally i would just upgrade to a new bike!
Just that road bikes aren't for me as over 35 mph on downhills I lost my bottle!
