Recommendations for an idiots guide - front derailleur

As the title says really, does anyone know of an idiots guide to fitting a front derailleur?
So far I've gotten the mech to shift up from small cog to middle, but not down and no chance of up to big cog....
Is there any really obvious things I could have neglected?
It's a boggo shimano mech, bottom pull - only odd thing is the shim as its a 32mm mech clamp reduced to fit a 30mm frame.
My brain is boxed, and its the last thing I need to sort on the project bike.

The cage does have to be quite close to the big ring.
I think it goes like this:
Align the cage fore and aft by rotating the mech.
Open the outer limit screw to make sure the cage can move far enough across the big ring.
Viewing from side on, lower the mech so that the bottom of the cage is within 3mm of the teeth.
Fit chain, adjust inner limit whilst chain is on middle sprocket of rear cassette. (the adjustment is to make the change onto the little ring. Only move the limit inwards enough for a clean change)
Take slack out of cable.
Adjust outer limit to make a clean change up onto the big ring.
My advice it to wait for someone else to correct these instructions and then give it a go!
