D-Lock help...

Hi folks. This is an unashamed cry for help...

I should preface all of this by telling you how utterly wonderful MrsD200 is in almost everything she does. However, aside from all of this, she has the memory span of a distracted goldfish...

So, to the crux of our issue. MrsD200 has locked up her bike outside her local tube station with her trusty Asus D-lock, and somehow managed to lose the key completely on her travels. The reply to the obvious question was "what spare key?", so even that one is out of the question...

I'm damned if I know what she's done with the receipt for the lock, and the bike (a beautiful sit/beg) was built for her by myself and my flatmate from scratch, so we don't really want to abandon it.

What the hell are our options? We can't well write to Asus, as I've got no unique ID/ref (unless I'm missing something on the lock itself). Also, turning up with an angle-grinder/lockpick kit might well result in a few dodgy looks from locals/the police (this is Zone 1 in London).

I'm out of ideas. PH, can you help?

Proof of ownership of the bike and a chat with the local police and the transport police as well as the tube station manager then cut with an angle grinder.

This, put a call in on 101 and get a CAD reference, have it to hand when you get challenged.

This might be the tricky bit... Given that almost all of the parts (bars, pedals and tyres aside) were bought from EBay/Gumtree and tarted-up, how the hell do I do this? Would a photo from last year be sufficient?

Also, I'm sure you just mistyped it in your post, but I assume it's an Abus lock, not Asus? I'm not saying this in a "grammar/spelling police" way, just thinking if you're researching other solutions, that you need to quote the right name.

Is it locked to an immoveable object? So no option of chucking it in a car and dealing with it at home?

Hi Andy. Great spot - I did indeed mean Abus. Sadly, it's anchored to a bike A-post outside a tube station... I'll have a look on youtube to see whether there is anything I can do, as I don't actually have access to an angle-grinder (unsurprisingly).

I've just been to the Abus website, and they say that my local stockist should be able to order replacement keys. How in blazes am I supposed to do this without any kind of reference number?

This won't help: but my Kryptonite keys have a code on the side which is registered.

I'd go with the angle grinder option.

In my halfords days we had to get the odd lock off and we used a car bottle jack if you have enough access to get one in...

You will have got a code-card, and two keys with the lock when you bought it.

I know you've said you don't have it, but at least if you know what your looking for it might be worth a second root around your junk draw on the kitchen?

Credit card size, dark grey and red iirc.
