£1000 29er in the Sales....

I'm looking to get a 29er, it'll be used as a bit of a winter training bike (both road and off road) and XC race bike for the local winter series.

I'm setting myself a budget of around £1000 but am prepared to wait until the sales start in a couple of months, I just want to be prepared to look out for the best bike at the right price, what would people suggest, I'm thinking a bike with an RRP of £1250ish might come in on budget in the sales.

So far I've looked at the Specialized Carve and some of the Cube range...

What else should I consider?

Merida have good 29ers under £1K whic are worth a look.

I am fairly confident you could build up an On-One 29er frame for around £1K easily enough, then you get to spec the items as you see fit

If you have a Giant dealer near you, they do test rides of their bikes for a small charge, worth considering if they have a 29er in stock.

I'm looking at getting a 29er through the bike to work scheme for commuting and fast XC. I have a StumpJumper FSR already but want a bike more suited for roads (Can't bring myself to buy a road bike yet!)

Thanks for the options so far, I had been looking at the possibility of building one myself - the on ones look excellent value, maybe I could build one over the next few months...

I assume the sizing of 29er's is the same as 26er's - I ride a 19.5" MTB currently...

a 19.5" 29er will be fecking massive.... your best bet is to find a big shop with a few bikes instore and get a feel for the sizing.

I've just bought this and the sizing of this 19" frame was not far off the sizing of a 21" frame with 26" wheels so you will have to be careful what you buy. Recommend the Cube 29ers as they are such lovely bikes with great spec but rare as rocking horse poo apparently!

The on-one I built for the girlfriend uses a 19.5in frame. She's 6ft tall with 36in inside leg. Standover height on the On-One was 1inch more than the GT avalanche that it replaced (GT had a size medium (18inch frame) and was a bit small for her, the new On-One is perfect).

It's a Cube Reaction Ltd Pro GTC in all it's Carbon framed loveliness!

Wanted a 29" version but they are all sold out everywhere so was going to have to settle for 26" wheel version but the shop had a cancelled order for this so snapped it up!

Reviews on this have been good, I was looking into one a while back.

I was looking at one of these but they were selling very quickly, I didnt have the cash at the time so builts an Onone Inbred instead. I like the Inbred but still kicking myself for not waiting!

Sizing wise, guides on the net say no difference between a 26er and 29er but from comments above it doesn't seem to be that way - Think I will have to make a trip to my LBS and have a go on a few, Should be able to look at some Cubes, Specialized and Giants to get an Idea.

Are shops likely to give a discount now knowing next years bikes are on the way?

I can see my next bike either being a vitus 29er or the decathlon 29er - the big rr. Properly budget end of the market but either of them looks great for the money.
