new bike front brake binding and not wanting to stop

new bike arrived yesterday the front disk binds on the pad at one point in its rotation and the leaver comes almost all the way to the bar before it does anything


anyone any suggestions bikes a radon team 7 and the brakes are formula rx

May seem a silly question, but is the disc warped or somehow out of alignment?

quite possibly how would i tell/fix its basically my first bike

You should be able to tell by just looking - spin the wheel, look at the disc edge-on and see if it appears to wobble.

If it does then either it's warped - new disc required - or it's not fitted correctly.

i dont think its warped tbh when i was messing with it last night i didnt see it wobble

there should be a screw on the lever to adjust brake lever travel.

with regards to the disc, it may be that you need to take the disc off the hub and re fit it. you will need to tighten each bolt a little at a time rather than tighten them up individually. whilst the wheel is out, try pushing the pads back in with your thumbs...

hehe what brakes are they? With Avids, they have CPS conical washers which help align the caliper, you back them off so they are loose, spin the wheel and pull the lever, when wheel has stopped, keep holding the lever in and tighten up the bolts. Easy!

they are formula rx dont think they have teh fancy positioning system just found the manual online for fitting instructions so will give it a go unscrewing calliper and pulling on brake to centre it better

Is the wheel in straight. Invert the bike and spin the wheel. Does it wobble?

As above next step is to see if the disc is running true.

If you are unsure pop back to your local bike shop and let them set it up for you.

Did that to my RXs last week - undo the two bolts slightly so the caliper wobbles, spin the wheel to help centre the pads and then grip the lever. Tighten the bolts up whilst holding the lever.

Not adjusted mine but I'm sure there is a screw at the join of the lever to adjust the reach.

also the shifter for the front seems to have a really long throw to change up they are slx sl-m660 any ideas ?

Got those shifters on my Cube (sounds almost identical so far) and they are fine. Obviously a front shift is a bigger chain movement than a rear one so takes more cable effort.

Brand new brakes?? - they may just simply need bedding in hence the not working properly at the moment issue. A few stops from high speed (obviously in an open area where you can't hit anything) should solve the problem.

If the pads are brushing the discs at one point but not enough to stop the wheel then it is probably a slight warp in the rotor and could be solved by undoing the rotor bolts and doing them back up in sequence a little at a time. It could be the caliper thats out of line though this would rub the discs at all points as the wheel was spinning.

edit to add - just realised you've been out on the bike so can probably disregard comment one. Air in the system?

Sorted loosened caliper span wheel applied brake and fixed it back up no more binding and seems to be stopping a bit better but not tried it yet really
