New components or new bike

Hi, I currently have a Rocky Mountain Oxygen Race MTB which is about 12 years old. I used to do a lot of off roading on it and I'm looking at starting again however I don't know the best way forward.

My current bike cost about £1200 in 2000 and I have always got on very well with it and is the best bike I have ridden, however it needs new forks, gears etc and it doesn't have disk brakes.

I don't have a huge budget, £300-£400, so I'm either thinking of a 2nd hand bike or buying new components. I guess there are pro's and con's to both, my biggest concern is the frame and components I would get on a 2nd hand bike would still be quite low spec at this price.

In terms of riding I don't do anything too extreme but will be doing medium off road and 50 mile trails etc.

What would you do?

What is wrong with the current gears and forks? Can't they be repaired instead of replaced?

I never thought about repairing them. I took it to a bike shop for a service and they said it wasn't worth doing as it would cost £300 - £400 to replace the worn components. They were also looking at selling me a new bike though!

Does anybody know a bike repair company in Nottingham that would give a good idea of costs.

Couple of points...

Do your current forks have mounts for disc brakes? Likewise, does the chainstay have the mounting points? If not then new forks will give you front disc brake capability. However this now means you need a new front wheel (or hub) to take the front rotor...

As for gears, new cassette, chain etc... it soon all ads up...

But the most important part of the bike is frame. So if you are happy with the frame, then do a costing on what is needed...

Would also look on ebay/others to see how much your pennies get in the second hand market...
