Few days in Torquay.....which bike shall I take?

Should I take road bike or mountain bike?
Just looking to get round without using the car all the time and fill my days if weather a bit poor.

I lived in Torquay for about 18 months while working on contract. Unless you nip up to Dartmoor there is not too much in the way of MTB trails locally that are more than 1/2 a mile long, that said it was a few years ago so may be better now. If you nip up to Dartmoor then you are in business!!

If you enjoy hills then take the road bike, tonnes of nice hilly country roads down there. Depends on what you get a bigger kick from!

Torquay has steep roads - so whichever bike is best for going up and down hills would be best

I recommend you take the mountain bike. It'll be better for slow rides along the seafront taking the sights (and the views of the local totty) and there's some great trails around Haldon Forest if you fancy a bit of off-roading. Haldon Forest is located about ten miles from Torquay just off the A380 going back towards Exeter.

Edited to add - be careful where you leave your bike as Torquay's got more than it's fair share of thieving druggie scumbags. Don't leave it in your parked car for example.

It's true about the thieves - I was walking along the strand and one of them just picked up a yellow 'wet slippery surface' sign from outside a store and just walked off with it.

Where are you staying? Does it have a secure car park? Parking is at a premium in Torquay and the harbour B & Bs have use of the top end of the harbour car park...but I've always tried to get a confirmed parking space outside the B & B. The parking ticket wardens are more than desperate to reach targets so don't think you might get away with a few minutes over!
