Abus Bordo all the way. Compact, very strong and deters thieves. It's also easily mounted on a bike and a snap at just £65. I've had one for years and it's faultless.

kryptonites all the way, yes they are heavy so its ideal if you can leave one at work/station etc but they have a big advantage in that thieves will look at it, recognise it and find a softer target. to be honest, thats all you can really do. if they want the bike they wil lcome at it with god knows what, but all you want to do (sad as it sounds) is make someone elses bike a more appealing target. their cable that loops through the d-lock is pretty tough too.
you can also buy something called pinheads(?) that fit onto QR skewers but can not be removed without the special key which might be worth a look. just dont forget the key on a ride in case of punctures..

I now have 3x £100+ locks around both bikes in my shed through a ground anchor under floor system. Coupled this with hinge-bolts and a £50 padlock..the f
kers won't be getting my bikes again any time soon!..
..get the best (usually most expensive) lock you can. I had £20 flexi locks on my £2500 worth of bikes in shed and a £10 padlock, needless to say they were stolen easily with bolt cutters in the night without making a sound. If they want them again I will hear the angle grinder!..I will never again skimp on bike security because I live in a nice safe area..scum obviously are attracted to nice safe areas!
In a nutshell think like a criminal and then your Bike won't get stolen, they will move on to next door like others have said

Accept no substitutes:

The two negatives for this is its heavy. and it does not fit around the wider lamp posts, railings etc.
Perhaps with one of these for your wheels:

FWIW swapping out the QR for non-QR is also probably a good idea.

Depends on the bike, obviously, but £40+ on a D-lock is your best lock-for money ratio. I never trust anything with "hinges" because they can be bent and attacked. Then it's just a case of finding a proper post or Sheffield hoop to lock it to, rather than being lazy and looping a cable around any old thing. Bikes often get lifted off of even quite high posts - Not hard to lift a bike to 8ft to get it over a parking restriction sign, for example.
I find the best carrying solution is a rucksack with "loops" on it. Lock the d-lokc through the loops and you're good to go.I can't stand D-locks mounted to the frame. They rattle and destroy the balance of the bike.
Abus locks with an HB rating around 60 or more are very good. They shatter the jaws of bolt croppers and resist angle grinders for a good few minutes. I've had my 2 ABUS locks for 10+ years now, in Edinburgh and Central London, and I've lost 2 bikes in that time. One was unlocked in a stairwell, the other was stolen off of it's backwheel in a station when I locked it up drunk.
So, buy a decent D-lock and use it is my recommendation. Oh, and replace squewers with "locking" ones, in preference to hauling round a heavy cable all the time. The one thing amateur bike thieves carry around is a small set of bolt croppers that make short work of cables.

Hahaha thats brilliant. Its an 800 quid bike so I don't necessarily want it to get nicked! I never even thought about replacing the QR tbh. It would certainly solve one quick problem!http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9-GVpIaPEGM&fea...

I usually have a rucksack for work or a Camelback when going around on a ride out, so I could easily put it in my bag I think. I have a bike pump and water bottle strapped to the bike where I can see some of the locks go on the bar so I'd rather not get one of those purely for convenience..
Cheers for all the suggestions fellas!

Honestly the Abus Bordo is about as tough as you get and no need to carry it around in a bag. It's always attached to the bike. You'd be hard pressed to break that without serious equipment and if they have it, no matter what you do, the bike will be taken.I usually have a rucksack for work or a Camelback when going around on a ride out, so I could easily put it in my bag I think. Check out the review. Took over 5 minutes to hack them.

I'd echo the Krymptonite Fugedabuit or however it's spelt. I'd add that you should use multi layer security.
Along with the d-lock you could use a cable alarm - http://www.c-p-p.co.uk/product/asp/ProdID/2051/Ctg... - and a 12mm diameter extension cable - toolstation do one for around £5. Now I'm not saying these are the ultimate security but they should be sufficient to move the theif on to the next one.
