Dahon crank/pedal bolt needed, help ( pics)

Afternoon men of PH. I need to get a new bolt of my Dahon Espresso, the thread seems to have been made of toffee and has given up the ghost.





I have googlewacked it and not had any luck, probably doesn';t help I don;t even know what the thing is called !

Is that the type of thing I could go to halfords for and show them, or do different bikes have different bolts in this area ???

Self extracting crank bolt is what you want. CRC sell them.

BUT you may have damaged the square taper BB in the process. Not worth repairing as they're only about 15 quid new and a shop would charge you that to re-tap the thread.

You'll need to measure the total width (length) of the BB from the taper to taper so that you order the same. Otherwise it mess with the chain line.

ETA Also check the shell width on your old BB so you order the correct one. It will either be 68mm or 73mm, i.e. the width of the frame (shell) where the BB sits.

Rhino you little stunner.

Couple of things, what is a BB ? How the hell do you get the tapered bit thing out ? the M8 bolt in the link doesn't look as long as mine and there doesn't seem to be option for different lengths ?

BB for bikers is bottom bracket. Its the housing which holds the bearings (usually sealed ball bearings). The spindle (tapered bit with square ends) does not come out on its own, its a part of the bottom bracket. The whole unit needs to be taken out using a tool which has splines on the outside that fit into the splines on the inside of the outer edge of the bottom bracket. If you dont have the tool probably best to get a bike shop to fit it for a fiver.

The BB comes in many different sizes, you need to know the axle length and the BB shell width (the section of frame the BB screws into) they are either 68 or 73mm with axle lengths of 100, 105, 110mm etc.

You will also need a special tool to fit the BB so it might be worth while asking at the local bike shop (LBS)

Yeah but mine were shiny anodised...my precious And twice the price, which given how much the PH cycle shirt has gone up since the last order is obviously what counts
