What Lycra Shorts?

I've done a lot of miles on my DnhB ones from Wiggle and am very happy with their performance. I think they were about £45 for the bib shorts.

Don't bother with shorts, IMO. Go for proper "bib shorts": much, much more comfortable, as there's no waistband to cut-in.

Budget? Things get very silly, very quickly!

FWIW I like Castelli. Their Velocissimo shorts (£80ish) are particularly good: better than the Aero Free (£130) shorts IMO. Giordana were excellent, but are hard to come by and i don't know about their recent stuff.

Head good things about DhB from Wiggle, although it seems Pro (?) shorts are favoured as the cheaper ranges are alledged to have rather thin lycra.

Endura were...OK. Got some FS260 Pros. Big, fat lumpen pad and OK-ish quality.

Lusso. British brand and very good value for money. I have two pairs of bib shorts.

I have a couple of pairs of Altura Pro-Gels that seem to be holding up pretty well.

As Jimbo said go for bib shorts not normal shorts much more comfortable: even if they do make stop for a piss awkward!

adidas fit me best of the lot, its really a case of trial and error, be prepared to wander around bike shops trying stuff on or just go online and order a load of shorts from different manfacturers and in a variety of sizes from places like chain Reaction and send the stuff back that doesnt fit. CRC's return policy is great and the collect+ returns process is dead easy.

bibs every time, and dont forget the chamois cream...

+1 for Bibs. Got 2 pairs of DHBs and both are well fitting and comfortable for 50+ miles.

Whatever you buy forget shorts. Bibs are the only option.

Castelli, Assos, Santini, Lusso, Rapha, Nalini will all be fine.

I have Gore padded shorts and like them a lot. Comfy and the waistband does not bother me. I did think about bib shorts but was concerned how to take a pee without making a large wet patch lol
