Starting a bike club

I live in a fairly new large village / small town and ride out every Sunday with a few other guys. We'd like to attract a few more people and maybe formalise things: advertising rides etc

Has anyone here ever done it? Any advice?

How large can we get before we'll need to affiliate with an organisation like the CTC or British Cycling? Will there be an insurance liability if we don't do this straight away?

i guess the question is do you want to compete in BC affiliated races?, then I'm assuming you would need a club constitution, a secretary etc and it would need to be quite formal.

alternatively, if its purely a social thing, you could all just get shirts made up with the club name and sign up as members of BC or CTC and take advantage of the insurance and other benefits on an individual basis. prety much as we are doing with the pistonheads shirts.

Hadn't really thought as far forward as racing as a club, although it'd be nice to work towards it.

Have you looked at goskyride.com? There's a push on social cycling at the moment, you can advertise routes and arrange rides on there, might meet your requirements

Registering your new club with BC is only £88 per year. That gets you third party indemnity insurance and what's more your members can claim their first year of personal BC membership for free as well.
