How many carbon owners using chain catchers?

Having just delved into the world of Carbon, I'm wondering whether to buy a chain catcher. I know that a chain shouldnt drop if adjusted correctly but there's always that chance.

Mines a clamp on mech so not sure what option I have to fit one or not. I just don't want to gouge a great big mark on my brand new frame!

I use a Rotor catcher on the R3. Weighs nothing, looks cool and could potentially save wrecking a frame. Don't see a reason why you wouldn't.

People can talk all they want about how a properly set up bike won't drop a chain, but try telling that to Andy Schleck...

I don't, but that's only because I've just discovered them - I'll be ordering one later today.

A few years ago I dropped the chain on my Stealth and it got picked up by the chainwheel bolts, dragging it through the gap between the chainwheel and the chainstay and taking a lump out of the latter in the process.

10g in weight though, that's gonna hit my average speed!

Even since Schleck lost the Tour (since crowned champion after Bertie banned) over a chain slip I thought must get one incase I loose that all important few secs when out on a sportive

TBH, for a few quid it's a no-brainer for piece of mind on my S2.

I've dropped my chain once or twice over the past few weeks - even after a service by my LBS. Despite stopping pedalling immediately, I was still gutted to see this damage:

£45 for the clamp on K-Edge? Bit steep for a tiny bit of metal isnt it? I thought they'd be under £20.

I've seen the Canyon Chain catcher which attaches to the bottle cage bosses which looks like the only one of its kind. £25 inc delivery is a bit better than the k-edge.

Deda dog fang is about 6 quid but only works on round tubes

K Edge is really overpriced

Rotor one is good

My bike has a small piece of metal stuck ti the chainstay behind the BB area which i assume is to protect it? Is it worth one of these still?

Depends. Hard to tell if the piece of metal in my photo above stopped any damage. The nick on the edge of it is mainly the plastic covering on it.

^^Is that not an old style chain catcher, designed to protect the chainstay and keep you clean when removing the back wheel, but keeping the chain on the ring at the front? One of these won't help at all should the chain drop off the chain rings.

Yeah it is, I have one on mine.

The Canyon one is £16 but with P&P from Germany, another £10.

I've bought a dog fang and will give it a go. I've done a bit of net searching and it appears that it can be fitted (as the Liquigas do their pro bikes) with a cable tie rather than using the bolt!

Apparently more of a problem on compact cranksets than on 39/53... maybe something to do with a bigger tooth difference between the two rings ?

Do the chain catchers just stop the chain bouncing off when changing down from large to small ring?

I've never had chainsuck on a road bike. On a Mountain bike, I think it tensions the chain to stop it slapping against the underside of the seat stay? I've coated key areas on mine in Helitape so if anything does happen, I'l be able to see it on the tape without marking the frame.
