Mudguard advice

Hi

Anyone use the Crud Road Racer or SKS Race Blades on their bike? My winter bike has no eyelets and am trying to work out which is likely to be better and looking for some practical advice

I have a pair of Raceblades; they keep the worst of the muck off you - and for group rides make it it possible for someone to sit behind you in the wet.

Thoughts in no particular order: they take some patience to set up to get a good fit and need a check before every ride. The rubber fixing bands perish and split, but you get plenty of spares. They will wear away the paint/lacquer on your frame and forks unless you apply leading-edge/helicopter tape before fitting them.

I have the cruds, they are a bit fragile but easy to get spares. Took a good while to get fitted correctly but thats got more to do with my mechanical ineptitude then the product! Fairly discrete when they are fitted too.

I bought some Road racers but couldn't get them to fit between the rear tyre and frame (Boardman Team Carbon). I ran race Blades last winter and they were OK but the rear guard kept getting knocked onto the tyre.

This winter I plan to buy an MTB/beaver tail type guard for the rear and use my Race Blade up front.

Word of warning on the Road Racers;

I was out on a ride last year and I came across a guy dazed at the side of the road with a split helmet, broken tooth and lots of cuts on his face. Somehow the front mudguard had managed to snag on the front tyre and fold into his front wheel, stopping him more or less dead in his tracks and over the bar.

I cannot comment on how well it was attached before his crash, and it was not possible to work out if one of the retaining clips had broken prior to the crash, or as a result of it but the whole thing looked quite flimsy and flexible IMHO.

I am sure plenty of people use these without issue or incident but I would look for something with slightly more substantial mountings......
