Hi doing the London Tri Olympic distance and the bike is a flat 40km , what is a reasonable time to be doing?
I'm doing it for ther first time this Sunday too. It's very flat, there's the odd bridge/slope to contend with but nothing more. I've been doing my training round Regents Park to simulate the flat nature of the course.
I'm guessing the fastest riders do it in about an hour (25mph) and the slowest about 1.5 hrs (17mph).
depends on your fitness and what bike you are riding to be honest. With an average level of fitness and a road bike, 90 minutes should be quite achievable on the basis that your legs have a swim in them and a run to go so some energy preservation is required.
refuelling on the bike leg is important as your body is in its most stable position to digest.
the fastest riders will be well under an hour, they can average 30 mph quite happily on a flat course and a TT bike, the slowest closer to two hours, maybe a bit more, people ride all sorts of bikes even at this distance there will be the odd hybrid.

Nobody broke the hour last year. The course is dogs
t if you're talking about this Saturday.
I'm doing it as part of a relay, I'd hope I can break the hour, but chances are there will be too many no hopers in the way and the course will take its toll!
Anything under 1.15 I would consider good.

I cant speak for okgo, but imagine he was referring to a small but widely witnessed issue with mass start events like triathlons, sportives and duathlons where the less experienced riders lack a certain spatial awareness shall we say. Whilst I appreciate that everyone has to start somewhere, hanging on to the racing line whilst you are sat upright on a hybrid wont endear you to one and all and weaving from left to right across the road is just plain dangerous but many people dont realise how fast people can approach them if the course is laps of a small route. Also, one of the busiest races in the country, at Olympic distance, is probably not the best "first triathlon" to choose...
That said, I have seen some utterly stupid overtaking from lead riders on circuit based events in duathlons, in particular when they try to go round the outside of people on the exit of corners etc etc

No I'm referring to those that will switch lines without looking, and generally make the bike leg, which is fairly chaotic anyway from viewing it last year, a far more risky business than it already is (we've all seen the general bike handling skills of Triathletes, it leaves a little to be desired even at the top level, let alone amateur!)
I've done the relay course a few times and didn't find the traffic or slower riders a problem.
The finishing times from previous years are available to download on the London Triathlon website, so you can see the range of times for the different events.
I would guess the relay times will look slower than the full Sunday course because of the multiple hairpins and the ruddy great bridge that has to be crossed several times on the relay/sprint course.

I've done both the Tower Bridge and Westminster routes.
There are loads of inexperienced riders out there, and yes, I got royally pissed off a lot of the time. I'm reasonably quick (16th in age group on the bike in 2010), and I was being cut up all over the place. Even on straight stretches. Some riders don't check over their shoulder before they pull out, and some of them take the most peculiar lines round corners it makes it hard to predict what they're going to do in front of you.
That said, I think the London tri is a great beginner race. It has the big atmosphere, everything is set out nicely and there are plenty of staff to help, and the support is pretty good too. Everyone starts somewhere, and I think a race with lots of other amateurs is the natural place to do it.
I won't, however, be doing the race again.

Horrid course the relay one. Slow, terrible surface, far too many corners etc
Hard to tell the times at the minute as there are some errors, but I did 1 hr 2 seconds (annoyingly) and it looks to be one of the quickest of the relay teams, and is quicker than all of the relay times from last year. Did a power pb to do it so happy with the ride.

I did every year from 2006 to 2010. Won't ever do it again because of the Mickey Mouse run course in 2010. 11k instead of 10k and stupid blind chicanes with plastic flooring. I flattened somebody out when they overtook on a blind bend, blind. They were running on the wrong side but there was nothing to stop them. Through no fault my own it could have been me on the floor.

Watching the sis in law now. It's chucking it down!

Completed London Triathlon this morning, my first triathlon which I really enjoyed. I was in the 8am wave so was lucky to miss the rain as well thank god. Would like to do it again, but I've entered IMUK next year so think I may not!
Swim: 00:26:46
T1:0:06:47
Bike: 01:02:32
T2: 00:02:45
Run: 00:53:09
02:31:57
A little disapointed to not make sub 2.30, T1 needs work and the run also lets me down a little. Really pleased with the bike, as I was flying and felt really good. Echo the comments of those not looking over their shoulders before pulling out. Luckily I was passing people fairly quickly and so it was too much trouble. Saw a couple of people crashed out, and heard two people collide about 50 metres behind me too.

Point of Order!!!!
This is a cycling forum, and I refer the Honourable Members discussing Triathlon to the following:
"Rule #42 // A bike race shall never be preceded with a swim and/or followed by a run.
If it’s preceded with a swim and/or followed by a run, it is not called a bike race, it is called duathlon or a triathlon. Neither of which is a bike race. Also keep in mind that one should only swim in order to prevent drowning, and should only run if being chased. And even then, one should only run fast enough to prevent capture."
Can we close this thread?

Well I seemed to pick the worast of the weather yesterday and was out on the bike from 2pm. Not sure where people were doing times around the 1hr mark though. That's an average of 40kph and most of the quick people passing me were barely hitting 40 downwind, let alone into it.
Having said that - I'm not convinced it was 40k, I think it was a little less.
