Wear on the chain ring - is this excessive?

My bike is a Giant Defy 1 with an FSA chain ring and has done 700miles. I was giving it a good clean this evening and noticed that most of the sprocket teeth are worn, some are much shorter than the next. The extent of the wear can be seen in the attached photos - compare the large ring with the smaller behind which hardly gets any use.




Is this wear normal? Admittedly, I probably don't clean it as often as I should...

I wondered that but the teeth are very un even. The photos don't show it but look at the difference between the two rings.

Yup. Still fine. Look around every tooth on the outer ring and you'll probably notice that they're all over the shop pattern/shape wise. As said it's for shifting. Every bike I've got/had is like it.

Fine!

I just assumed the chain ring was softer metal than the chain so that one would wear more. So I can relax and not bother the LBS

It sounded very crunchy as well before I cleaned it!

You'll know when it's worn because you'll stand on the pedals and the chain will skip. If you want to prevent this from ever happening get a chain measuring tool (cheap). And replace the chain whenever it says.

But as said earlier, that is how it should look.
