Free hub body - which one?

The free hub on my Cube Ltd is making increasingly nasty grinding noises when I'm free wheeling, so I'm guessing the time has come to replace it.....

Last week I ordered what I thought would be the correct part -



however when I finally managed to remove my old one (it took me a good while to realise that the 10mm allen bolt which hold it on was on the drive side... ), I found that it was incorrect.

The type I need is one of these -



I've searched on google, and the only ones which look similar are listed as 8 speed, whereas mine is 10 speed. Does anybody know if they are the same width, or if I need a 10 speed specific one.

Any help much appreciated, as I feel I'll soon be in a situation where my legs are spinning but I'm not going very far....!

What sort of hubs are they?

Definitely Shimano, not sure of the model. Will check tomorrow and have another Google.

Have you given in a good clean. Do the bearings run free? Flushing it through with oil often solves a lot of issues. You might get away without a new one.

Don't do this, 'flushing with oil' will remove all the grease and lead to failure very quickly.

You're doing the right thing getting a new freehub body. The type you've got I'm not familiar with, most shimano freehubs are of the type you've bought. Maybe a trawl through the appalling shimano website is in order.

Or some shiney new wheel!!!

Apply a small amount of very light grease to every piece of the inside of the hub-body, put it back on and I bet its fine.
I've never had to replace a hub body when it starts making screeching noises.
My training wheels have 30,000 + miles on them, all they ever require is light grease and they are fine again.

You don't need much grease inside the free hub bearings. Oil will be fine provided the whole thing is reasonably well sealed against the elements. I have never replaced a freehub in 20 odd years (occasionally a new bearing is needed) by maintaining them regularly in this way.
