2 weeks ago today, purchased a pair of GORE over-shoes. the left overshoe has a hole in it.

took it back to shop today and they said they wouldn't take them back because it's wear and tear, saying bullst like you shouldn't even walk in them and that it looks like it's rubbed the tyre when i've gone to unclip out of the cleat.

i just said well in that case it's not fit for purpose, it should be designed with that possibility in mind and reinforced in that area etc; if i'd have known they'd last 2 weeks i wouldn't have bought them. they said they get loads of people trying to return them (cue me saying well they're clearly crap then aren't that).

basically, they said well i won't get my money back from GORE as it's not a fault with stitching but more wear and tear; to which i said it doesn't matter what GORE say, you sold the product, and I don't think the product is suitable.

now, between me and my mate who was with me, we've spent around £11,000 with this shop (if not more!) and made this very clear that they'd lose business.....and they were STILL arguing over some £40 overshoes.

30mins later, they took them back, have ordered some "tougher" winter ones and have credited my account so await to get those at some point next week.

i was furious!

You've had a result. I tried this with some children's Puma trainers that Max (5) wore through in a week. Shop said exactly the same and were not interested. Very grey area, as you know you have not done anything excessive, but they don't.

Under the revised Sale of Goods Act, before an item is 6 months old it's up to the retailer to prove that the item wasn't at fault. Also don't waste your time arguing with shop monkeys - write directly to head office and you'll be far more likely to get a good answer.

Not saying its correct or acceptable, but my BBB 'heavy duty' overshoes ended up with holes through the bottom inside 2 days of use - I walk about 100m to the shower facilities at work in them.

As its just cosmetic I let it go.

I stopped bothering with overshoes as I got through so many (all replaced by me complaining). They just aren't up to the job really. Wear ski socks instead.

Logically the design is not up to the job if you have to walk. Its inevitable that whatever brand you get you will get holes in them and they will wear out. I have a set. I'm using them with MTB shoes so I have some tread at the bottom but mine still have holes in them.
I read a lot of reviews when I was buying and there are none that are for a lifetime as such. I expect to get one winter season out of mine before throwing them away or having a go at patching them. You can get ones for £18 - go for them rather than an expensive brand.

Both pairs of overshoes I tried died in less than 3 weeks. Been using MW80s (I think MW81 are current) for ages - this is their third winter - and they still clean up pretty good. Great boots. The sodding great hole where your foot goes in limits their true waterproofness*, but if you can accept that your feet will get damp, but stay warm, they are ace.

I didn't take either of mine back. However, if I'd spent that sort of money in a shop, I wouldn't have expected an argument. My Japanese colleague reckons we can't do good service in this country.

  • Apparently if you use them with boot gaiters, they are completely waterproof.

Yup, I recently managed the same with Oakley. Emailed Customer Care Europe and replacement parts and an apology about the fault were with me within 7 working days. Very impressed.
