POSSIBLE ?? Ebay SCAM

Put a nice racing bike on ebay with a fixed Buy It Now at £xxx, with the option of Make an Offer, anyway I get a Make an Offer at the Full price I was asking !!! buyer wanted to collect next day and pay cash, so without giving my collection address I asked him to call at 9am, by 10,30 No Call, at 10,45 the phone rings and someone claiming to be the buyers father calls to say he just happens to have a courier in the area ,and can the bike be collected. I asked if the courier had the cash with him, whereby the father says no, but if I give him my bank details he would BACS the funds in, at this point I was getting VERY suspicious, I declined giving my bank details and said to paypal the funds prior to collecting, this he said was down to his "son", at this point I cancelled the transaction , and also filed a sellers credit claim with ebay, was the buyer a bit dim or is this a new ebay scam ?????

I'm not exactly sure what the scam would be, but I would also be very skeptical in the same situation.

If the auction was a "collection only" then I can't see any reason why Ebay shouldn't back you.

Saying that I'm a naive soul, so could be missing something obvious.

Paypal wouldn't really have helped you in this situation as if he did a chargeback you wouldn't have been able to prove that you'd sent or delivered the item.

You give out your bank details every time you write a cheque, fill out a direct debit mandate etc.

I don't believe a bank transfer can be easily reversed

I would definitely avoid paypal on collection only auctions. As one poster above says, no proof of delivery.

Deffo a scam.
The BACS reference will prove to be no more than a reference the "buyer" uses to lull you into a false sense of security and release the bike to the "courier".
3 days later you get a letter from the bank to say the funds didn't clear.
I would have had the Police waiting for the courier (who prob was the "son")

they only want your address, they come round in the early hours and nick the bike. The bank stuff is just fluff to embelish their story....

I seem to remember Clarkson saying this a few years ago so he gave out his details in a newspaper column he writes saying it rubbish that this is enough to get money from your account,he then had £££££££ taken from it

Clarkson gave out his account mnumber and sort code and people signed him up to direct debits, IIRC for Help the Aged amongst others. Credit it to him though, I read a while back that he kept them going for a few months

It's a numbers game. You try it often enough you'll walk into someone without their thinking cap on. Same as email spam - send out a thousand, catch three or four. It's good enough.

The scam is they use the word BACS as the reference for the transaction hoping that some unsuspecting shmuck thinks its actually a BACS transfer.

Hi Guys, just glad you all think something is not kosher with this ebayer,
the initial thought was why offer full price when a "offer price" was available,??? could have BIN.
