2001 Kona frame warranty?‏

Bit of a random question this but for once the internet doesn't hold the answer. My 2001 Kona Hahanna frame decided to give up on me this evening after 11.5 years service... Does anybody here know/can remember what the frame warranty was on Konas of this era?

For some reason I seem to remember it being a lifetime warranty for the original owner in which case it'd be worth pursuing rather than having to buy a new frame.

Just checked my 1998 UK Kilauea

Handbook says 20 years for frame (original owner only) - but supplemental info booklet says >= 1998 purchase = 10 years for the frame. Purchase before 1998 - 20 years.

Warranty is for manufacturing defects only.

I think the point was more that the Hahanna was the entry level model and things have moved on a bit since 2001....

True that it was but as a third bike it was a very useful tool for commuting throughout the bad weather in winter and I'll miss not being able to use it.

to be honest, you should find a Hahanna or a Fire Mountain frame quick enough and for a reasonable price on ebay. I found a saracen hardrock for £60 which has become "pub bike"!

No harm in asking at the Kona dealer ? For a look in, a replacement frame is a possibility. The Kileaua was a lighweight steel frame, so the warranty will be less. I believe the Explosiv only came with a nominal year at times.

How big is it?

I might have a 94 explosif frame in the garage in 19". Bit tatty but would do.

19" would be too big unfortunately as mine is an 18". I've raked around Ebay etc and surprisingly there are very few available second hand but something may come up. Otherwise I may just get a new bike altogether for commuting on during the winter.

I'll also be ringing the original dealer tomorrow to see what they have to say about the situation.

The best thing you can do is write a polite letter to Kona making it clear that you bought the bike brand new in 2001, it has given you 11.5 years of fantastic service, you are a dedicated mountain biker and value the brand etc etc....

You may get a BIG surprise!! In MBUK a few months back there was a letter from a chap who owned a similar age Specialized who cracked the frame and by contacting Specialized they arranged for a brand new 2012 model to be delivered to his local bike shop!!!
