Mr Armstrong is appearing on the Oprah show this week. And rumour has it that he's going to come clean about his "alleged" naughtiness.

My questions are as follows.

Are his former sponsors (from many years ago) right to be able to attempt to recover the monies paid to him in sponsor ship? Surly at the time and for years after no harm was done to the brand. And even now i cant see people snubbing Radio Shack because of their involvement with him.

And, What about all the others who have been found out? Have they all had to pay back all their earning the same as Lance? Or is Lance being made an example of?

Nobody outside cycling would give a st if he hadn't been accorded 'celebrity' status. Made an example of to whom? The whole sport is constantly looking for ways to do what he did. Anyone who believes otherwise is a romantic fool, imho.

Interesting issue with regard to the sponsorship of Lance's old cycling team by the Discovery Channel, given their co-ownership of the Oprah Winfry Channel... scratchchin

Other riders maybe? It's why i was wondering if the others have had the same level of punishment.

Very few of the others were famous. Lance was a household name, and he got the fame and fortune. I'd imagine going after one of the others would yeild bugger all.

It beggars belief that not only do the cheats make fortunes out of cycling but then they write books and win literary prizes for their troubles!

No cheat should be allowed to make money out of writing about cheating!

But Lance didnt win everything. The Giro and Vuelta both pay out decent amounts i assume. And the top teams riders still get win bonus and personal sponsership.

Maybe if the sucessfully recover money from Armstrong it'll open the flood gates for the others.

The giro and Vuelta were and still are NOTHING compared to the tour. Ask someone what the TDF is on the street, they will know, ask them about the Giro D'Italia, 99% of people would have no idea (possibly more now as Wiggins has said he will target it, but back then). Its all about the TDF, always will be.

Top riders earn hugely different amounts, I would imagine Cavendish earns more all said and done that entire teams in the pro peloton who are the same caliber of riders as him. Sponsors (as I'm sure you know) only go after a certain kind of person, take a sport like football (where most players earn well, but some earn mega bucks from outside of their actual wages) and think about it like this - Cristiano Ronaldo is marketable, and makes a LOT of cash from sponsorship, Iniesta also one of the best players on the planet, will make peanuts in sponsorship terms compared.

Going after Lane will yield cash, as he is worth millions and millions of pounds, the others probably live pretty modest lives in comparison.

I can't see the sponsors recovering money, they got the benefit from the sponsorship at the time - that benefit hasn't now fallen away because he's been outed.

Have you read Millar's book? It makes for a very interesting read and is all about his cheating.

I've just finished reading The Secret Race penned in part by Tyler Hamilton (2004 Olympic TT Gold medallist - since stripped) - made for very interesting reading given the current furore around Lance, the USPS team and the USADA report.

I read Millar's book before Christmas. He's very open and also clear about the doping being a major error for him. He served his ban and is back cycling. Had it not been for his doping ban I suspect he'd be in Team Sky now.

Lance being on Oprah isn't the same as being in front of a Court, is it?
He's not going to say, "I doped." He'd be arrested and charged with perjury having previously sworn under oath that he hadn't/didn't dope.

Apparently he can't be perjured as five years have passed since he made that statement in court.......at least that is what I read t'other day.

Shame.
I wonder if there's a statute for the UCI to claim back all the winnings paid?

It's money down the back of the sofa for him. Have they chased all the other cheats?

More appropriate question might be how many didn't cheat?

This makes interesting/harrowing reading - taken from the USADA investigation, summary of 1st to 3rd place finishers in the TDF from 1996-2010:

I was listening to the very good five live podcast from October earlier today, shocking how much it was just part of things and the lengths they went to when covering it up. if you didn't dope you didn't get a place on the team..

Current rumour is he'll apologise and work with USADA to testify against others, and get his ban reduced.

He's past the statute of limitations for perjury so that's ok; the Times and US Postal (the govt) will have their legal cases settled (couple of million).

He's worth $100m or so.

As Nicole Cooke said yesterday: the cheats make money on the way up and the way down.
