Selling a bike - How do I price it?

So, to turn a long story into a short one, the doctor has given me 6mths off rugby to help clear up a spot of dodgy knee cartilage. As such, I'm also banned from running and riding offroad for the same time period (although commuting on my fixie is allegedly fine - he clearly hasn't seen the state of the roads around Waterloo recently!).

The upshot of all this is that the bike that I bought last week as a late Christmas present to myself (to join some friends on trips to the Welsh valleys) is effectively a massive paperweight until the summer. I don't really have the space to keep it inside, so I'm going to get shot of it. It has not been ridden a single metre outside. It cost me £400 last week, and while I realise that I'm not getting that back for it, what is realistic for me to expect? I've never sold a bike before, and have only ever bought new from shops.

Thoughts? Also, any tips on where to advertise it (aside from EBay and Gumtree)?

would it be possible to visit the bike shop, speak to the management/owner, return the bike and possibly get a credit note for the full price of the bike?


they could still sell the bike as new, and you could purchase another in the future.

Try a forum like Bikeradar. Cheaper bikes are easier to sell, especially this time of year with ny resolutions to get fit. You'll probably get a reasonable price for it, I would think £300ish is possible if it's not being discounted elsewhere and posting will obviously help it sell.

Take it back to the shop and explain.

Any decent shop will either credit note or refund.

trying to sell it at this time of year, slaes etc, will be hard, you will be lucky to get much more than £300 for it so speaking to the shop is the best option, i'm sure they will understand. dont mention the "still able to ride the fixie" bit and go a bit heavy on the injury etc...

You would probably get a solid £180 to £200 on Ebay, but I would also take it back to shop and see what they can do.

Yep back to bike shop would be my choice if they were willing to do that for you.

Selling a bike 2nd hand online near the RRP is pretty much impossible. Unless your bike is highly sought after then expect to take a big hit on your purchase price.

If you still go private for selling then you can try some of the forums like cyclechat, retrobike, singletrack or sales sites like BikeSoup and GoingGoingbike

Why not try it on eBay? Put it up a brand new, explain the circumstances and then invite offers, you don't have to take them but it may give you a steer on value.
