mtb'ing on a ski slope
Discussion
i know this is a stupid question and i know the answer. but i'm hoping i'm wrong....
off skiing over half term. want to take the mtb.
can i mtb down a ski slope whilst there are skiers there? thinking blue runs only.... obviously would have to cycle up the mountain as lifts won't accommodate.
going to morzine if that helps...

I have rode down a ski slope in Morzine, but in the middle of summer after I cooked my brakes and needed a slightly less deadly route down, it was boring, but because it was so wide I piled on a LOT of speed without really noticing and really struggled to stop at the bottom.
I imagine in Winter you'd be treated as a total liability, especially as you'd have the unenviable ability to gain lots and lots of speed, without the ability to brake or steer, kind of like the start of the Mega, only much longer and without sharing the mountain with lots of others who are doing the same thing - I suspect chaos would reign and you'd be told off many times by many people - please do it, and film it!

Unlikely you'll be allowed, the piste police will no doubt take you lift pass off you.off skiing over half term. want to take the mtb.

Watch some Megavalanche videos - going downhill on pisted snow you have virtually no control of your speed and very little over your direction. Speedway style, back wheel kicked out, sliding on one foot, is about the only way to stay upright.

If you're anywhere in proximity of piste users and doing that, expect to be escorted off the mountain. Often there's cross-country ski trails or nordic walking tracks you could follow which are flatter, but I still struggle to see why you'd bother.

You obviously don't ski much or you wouldn't ask the question!
That depends on your definition of skiing much. Currently I only go twice a year (off tomorrow in fact to Morzine for 5 days) and again at half term for the week. Managed 2 trips a year for about 3 years now, otherwise it was 1 week a year. Does that count as much? Not compared to some I am sure.I've also been skiing to Morzine 3 times over half term and holiday periods, so have a rough idea how busy it gets. I also know there are plenty of quieter slopes that can be taken advantage of.
So OscarIndia, can I politely request you take your presumptions and FoxtrotOscar?

See you at the Pleney lifts in Feb

So based on your experience do you think it would be a good idea.....I've also been skiing to Morzine 3 times over half term and holiday periods, so have a rough idea how busy it gets. I also know there are plenty of quieter slopes that can be taken advantage of.

Mountain Biking down a ski slope is pants.
For two reasons;
1, You have very little control and your abilty to change direction is very limited.
2, Boarding down them in winter is much more fun!
On the PDS for two years they had a glacier section to ride it was a pain, Morzine in the summer on a bike is great - probably the best place in europe (maybe the world) for biking.
I think if you get the chance you will do it for two minutes realise how bad it is and ski the rest of the time.

Now that looks a right laugh do you have to be a pro level rider to do it or can anyone with a Halfords bike give it a go http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TflVhmiD-sU

^This, because bloke on skis/snowboard does plenty enough damage if out of control, letalone a bike too.My mate built a proper snow bike last year (no wheels and ski-blades in their place) and did get permission for a short session on the indoor slope at Trafford Park, but said the real pistes in the Alps aren't generally too keen to mix bikes with other piste users.
