Costs of taking a bike on the plane

As above not taken a bike on a plane in a long time does anyone know the approx cost that budget airlines charge? for instance going to Alicante. I used to take mine in a cardboard bike box like the ones the bikes are delivered in now, will this do or will it have to be in a Bike box-bag.
Lots of horror stories with excess bagage and bikes with the cheap airlines, make sure if you can't pre-book your bike that you print and take the part of the T&C's with you.
Saying that we flew London to Vancouver with Thomas Cook, hellish flight, but they were OK with the bikes, even though 1 or 2 actually were slightly heavier than the max limit - £25 each way which isn't bad on long haul flight.
BA used to take bikes for free which made them comfortably cheaper to fly to Geneva with than Sleazyjet, but I think they charge now sadly.
Bear in mind you're P&J is completely at the mercy of the airport staff. I've had a rotor bent and another guy's wheel had been stood on and bent a few spokes - and that was super tough DH bikes in proper bags.

I have just booked Easyjet flights today....£27 each way from Edinburgh to Krakow for my bike. I've taken bikes abroad loads of times with Easyjet and so far I haven't had any issues, but I'm pretty anal about how I pack. The frame and forks are liberally covered with foam, the wheels have separate padded bags, the cranks come off (easy to do with Hollowtech), discs are taken off the wheels and are packed between two bits of stiff cardboard, the bars come off and are bubblewrapped before taping them to the side of the bike and the rear mech is un-bolted and taped to the chainstay. Touch wood - I haven't had any problems in 13 years of flying with a bike.

Could it be that you were within the weight limit of individual allowance? I have spent years paying for extra baggage as a diver. Sounds like they have the same charges for bicycles. Thankfully, I have never been charged excess baggage at the counter.
If you were going on a cycling only holiday and you have a decent bike (sub 8Kg), then I would have thought you could squeeze it all into the standard 25Kg allowance.
