What mid-price hybrid/commuter tyre?

As per the title really. I've started to pick up a lot of punctures recently and I think part of it is just that the tyres on my commuter bike are ancient. There's almost no tread left on the centre section of the tyre.
So, what are the recommendations for an all-weather 700C tyre? My commute is tarmac only. It would be good to have something that can cope with an excursion over the grass, but it doesn't need to tackle tow paths or anything. Something reasonably affordable would be good too.
I'm thinking I'll probably stick with inner tubes and run one of those puncture protector tapes round the inside of the tyre.

Depends what "mid-price" means but the Kenda small block 8 is worth a look though it might feel a little slow on tarmac even at 80+ psi.
As in, something half decent would be nice but I'm a slightly podgy bloke riding to work not a diehard roadie willing to pay vast sums for incremental improvements in inertia or rolling resistance.

My commute is half canal towpath so might be overkill, they offer different tread patterns though.
They have a good reputation and definetly feel up to the job.

Went for Schwalbe Marathons in the end.
Not really sure where they fit in price-wise, but they were the LBS's recommendation and I needed something urgently after one of my previous tyres gave out completely.
Very happy with them so far. They're slightly chunkier than the previous tyre, but they run at higher pressures so the rolling resistance is lowered I'd say. Wet braking is a lot better than it was on the near-slick Contis.
