Wheel Upgrade Time....

Going to be upgrading the wheels on the Synapse soon, they are Formula Rb-51 hubs fitted with Maddux Rs 3.0, 32 Hole rims & 15swg ss spoke.
Looking, typically, to spend as little as possible to upgrade the wheels to something a little lighter.
Any suggestions?

I think you need to give an indication of budget first, if you are willing to pay up around the £300 mark these are a good option;

would probably be the best all rounders for the money, £150 for 1750gs wheels,
Merlin are doing Mavic Aksiums for £165 and Bike-Discount have the fulcrum 5s for £175 though they are the CX version (double seals, no other difference!). Campag Sciroccos are worth a look too. 105 on open pros will be strong and reliable, possibly a bit lighter too but not by much.
Personally, I'd either up the budget or not bother, £200 isnt honestly much to spend on wheels and you wont be making giant strides beyond what you have. The Aksiums and the Fulcrums will be near on 1800gs and I'm not convinced by the whole Mavic WTS thing either.
For £300, you start to get into the sort of wheels which, as a comparison, are equivilent to those fitted on £2k+ bikes, Campag Zondas, Shimano RS80s etc... and then you really start to notice a difference.

I think that applied in 1986 when the far east was only capable of making things out of plastic suitable for filling christmas crackers but to be honest, if people are preapred to put in some research, it just doesnt apply anymore...Light.

If that's what they've renamed their Model B's then yes. I couldn't find a bad review, they are light for the money and with decent tyres on, fantastic ride quality. RS80s etc will be another step up I am sure, but I am very happy with this my first wheel upgrade over oe (Giant).richardxjr said:

My new bike has come with Vittoria Open Corsa Evos and its too early to compare them with the Conti GP4000S on my old bike.
The Contis did everything I ever asked and, in some bends, more than I dared ask. They ran beautifully and were resistant to almost anything puncture wise so no hesitation in recommending them.
I'll let you know on the Corsas.
