Which of these MTB's would you choose?

I have a £700 voucher on the way from Ride2Work and I fancy a MTB for some fun on the local tracks and trails and to *cough* ride to work. Limited to Evans only which rules out some of the highly regarded bikes at this budget but these two take my fancy. Anybody have any experience or suggest which is the better buy (or is there anything else worth considering?).

d and every little helps...Yes, that looks nice too, although some of the components/fork look lower spec to my very untrained eye (but Cannondale frames supposedly good?). As I don't plan on ever doing any 'hard core' off roading, do you think I'd ever appreciate the difference of Deore vs. Alivio components or the Rockshox fork of the Trek vs. the Suntour of the others?

That charge will be a cool bike, and it's 10sp which is a bonus over the 9sp others, 9sp stuff is getting harder to find in anything but very high-end or very low-end spec and it's an expensive pain to switch to 10sp later, as I've just found out...

I'd want 10 speed, I seem to struggle with 9 on my XC bike however I'm using a single front ring. The Charge looks like a nicely spec'd bike for the money just a shame about the odd size wheels Still can't get excited about 29ers though, fugly things.

Straight fight, head to head, between the Scott and the Trek, the Trek gets my money. How much help my opinion is, I don't know, but you asked the question, and there's my answer.
If it was me, I'd go try both bikes, side by side. See which one fits better. Try to go into the shop with an open mind. Ultimately the desire to ride more often will be greater on the bike that appeals to you the most, and that's not a decision I'd be comfortable making from seeing a couple of internet images.
