Another 'what bike?' thread.

As above really!

I've moved to London and am looking for a bike, possibly a road bike or a single speeder, I don't really know which! I'll be riding on the roads, out of London! Not sure how far I'll be going either, as a complete road novice I doubt it'll be that far to start with.

I'd prefer a brand new bike, max budget is probably around £650 for the bike... Which I gather isn't that much!? Any suggestions and advice welcome.

I'd go for something like this which is a pretty much standard spec bike for the money. There are loads of bikes around at that price but most will be very similar, make sure it fits and dont be afraid to ask them to move the seat around till you are comfy. There is loads of info on the web about bike fitting and most will have a size guide.

People may say go second hand and get more for your money but its nice to have new things. If you spend much less, new bikes can be a bit rubbish and the second hand argument is valid but I think any new bike over £500 is worth getting for a novice.

Also go for gears, if you get hooked, you'll go further than you think and you'll kick yourself if you only have a single speed bike. Yes, some people ride for hundreds of miles on single speeds but they arent normally novices....
