Pantani was my hero, I loved watching him ride. Matt Rendell's book is a great insight not just into Pantani, but how cycling and the Giro is seen in Italy. You'll still see thousands of Pantani fans lining the roads at this year's Giro, his name on the road everywhere and the pirate flags out. I love these two clips:

Yes, he was on drugs, but in a field where it was rife, he was still the outstanding climber of his generation and came back from some terrible injuries as a young pro.
