Cheap fork refurb

I have an old Trek MTB with Sun tour M2025 front forks.
There's now about 10mm of travel in normal use, and could do with a service/refurb.
I've got one side open to reveal the spring, removed that, plenty of grease still on there, and the fork travel feels quite smooth without the spring in.
The other side, the plastic ”nut” on top just spins and doesn't appear to be doing anything.
The tubes are clean, with no scuffs or scratches, although the rubber dust boots could do with being replaced. Does anywhere stock spares for such basic kit, or are they a throwaway item?
How do I get the two sets of downtubes apart? I tried gentle persuasion, being new to bike mechanics I though better not use brute force for now!
I know they're not the best, but for plodding about on, I'd rather not spend much on me forks, although if anyone knows any reputable sellers of some second hand, more popular, easily serviceable forks, feel free to point me in the right direction.

I've got a set of Suntour XCR's doing nothing in the shed. I tripped over them earlier when i was servicing my bike which has been sitting there for 18 months whilst my back & arm have been "resting" (long story).
Anyway, if you can collect them / arrange collection or meet up somewhere (I'm at Croft this weekend..had peek at your profile
) they're yours for the grand total of sweet FA.
They came off my 2010 Scott Aspect when i replaced them with Rockshox Reba SL's a couple of years ago. 100mm Travel IIRC, quite happy to measure the steerer tube if you measure yours (fnarr fnarr).

I have Suntour forks on my 2012 Giant 29'er. The lockout doesn't really lock it out, it just firms it up a bit. Any ideas on how to make it work a bit better? Or am I stuck with it?
Even with the lock fully engaged there will be some movement. I can compress mine about an inch or so when they're locked out.I have Suntour forks on my 2012 Giant 29'er.
