So, what do we think?
I'm tempted by the middle one with a Ride2Work voucher.
OK spec for £1000, and I quite like the overlap detail on the seat stays on the top tube (reminds me of the old Carltons of the 70's and 80's)

Whilst I wish him luck with it all, I don't think he's going to make quite the same splash that Boardman did / has with his range of bike. To me, a 6061 frame with 105 and some not that special wheels for £1,000 just seems on par. It's not going to be enough to draw punters away from the normal big names. You can get the new Alu framed Madone for that money, look like Lance Armstrong and benefit from years of tour victories / marketing hype. Likewise a very nice 105 equipped CAAD 8.

I just checked actually. You can get a carbon Boardman with *some* 105 bits on it for less than a grand.

I have to admit, I was expecting more than has been presented. A bit more pazzaz of some sort.How did Boardman start? was it slow and then built up over the years? Hoy bikes might run in a similar way and with Evans backing should get some good marketing.

I have never 'got' the whole thing with buying something with a famous persons name on it.
I can understand that the Boardman bikes offer good VFM for the spec, but surely the majority of brands carrying a famous cyclists name are manufactured by a generic frame maker and built in the far east (along with the majority of major brands). If they can undercut the likes of GIANT etc then surely the costs of manufacturing the frames and the investment in R & D must be minimal...?
I would have thought that you are better off spending your hard earned cash on a bike made by a reputable bike manufacturer who has a decent R & D budget, controls their own manufacturing process, and can offer economies of scale when it comes to buying in bulk components.
But maybe I am just too skeptical - I have always believed you 'get what you pay for' (and have suffered many times in the past by trying to save a few quid and buying cheap - but buying twice...)!

For the most part I think this is true, but then the counter argument to this, certainly with regard to Specialzed, Trek and the other big names, is that a lot of your budget is going support the marketing and race programmes. I know what you're saying though - I wouldn't be slinging my leg over a 'Hoy' just for the sake of the name on the downtube.
Despite knowing this though, I'm won over by the snob factor of the big names. £1,200 for a Specialized, or some no-name which I know is built in the same factory for £100 less? Knowing my bike looks a bit like the one Cav rides makes me quicker up the next hill, no?

As close to a full Ultegra groupset as you're going to get at £1300
OK, it's an aluminium frame, but I paid £1100 for a similarly specced Merida nearly two years ago, and that was marked down from £1500, so it looks like decent value. I'm not in the market for another Ali bike though, so I won't be rushing off to Evans any time soon.

The £1k one looks good - 105 (Tiagra cassette...) and full carbon fork is about on par, but just 8.8kgs is pretty good.
It's 'competitive' and I wish him well.
As for buying a bike with someone's name on - what's the difference between this and Dolan, Holdsworth, Merckx, etc? It's been going on for years...
