Prospective 2nd hand purchase - how to value?

As per the title really - I need a road bike to sit alongside my CAADX 'cross bike, for the summer commute.

I have the chance of purchasing a 2008 Ridley Damocles, Full Dura Ace with Aksiums, it's in good condition (some obvious signs of wear (shiny chainring spider etc)... but on the whole it's in good nick (no obvious damage to the frame).

I know the history of the bike, so know it hasn't been crashed / smashed / nicked etc... but neither of us know what to value it at. Any ideas? I had a look on ebay etc, but there were no others around for comparison.

Guess its worth how much you are willing to pay. Go in low if it was me!

Look at similar bikes on ebay/similar spec/similar price when launched

As its not a common make its normally worth less or more than the mainstream brands

Yep - totally get that one... however I'm trying to be sensible about it too (i.e. not offering something stupid either way).

I wonder what a similarly specced machine was at the time. Trek Madone? I used to have a 5.2 at around the same time, with a similar spec...

Road Bikes like Boardman, Trek, Giant & Specialized are quite straightforward as there are loads for sale to get a benchmark, other brands can sometimes suffer as there is not the mainstream knowledge/appreciation, excluding higher end stuff which can get decent values.

Check Gumtree/BikeRadar/Ebay to see if there are any others and price up or down according to upgrades

I guess you could add a bit as you know the history and that it is in honest condition

£1k tops. Too much competition from the likes of Sensa, Vitus etc to warrant spending much more than that just to have 5 year old DA and low end aftermarket wheels.

Interesting benchmark. MUCH better wheels on that one too.

Yeah, it's DA 7800, all recently serviced / fettled. Thanks for the link to the sold eBay example - it's very similar to that one. I guess, given the difference in the wheels, that I'll bid him £350 for it and see where that takes me...

Update - seems it actually has Ksyriums on it, and has just had 2x new Michelin PRO4 race tyres as well as some Ultegra pedals.

I think I'll be looking at around £450-£500 all in too, so I think that's a good deal...!
