Canyon vs Planet X

On the surface very similar companies, direct order and both offering very good VFM, however they would appear to be percieved completely differently.
Canyon appear to have a reputation for super high quality with a low price tag whereas Planet X seem to be a low price tag with not so high quality and are simply rebranded, generic Chinese frames.
Is this the case? Canyon supply a World Tour team, does this make them better? Is it that they are German and thus seen as a bit more exotic?

Canyons frames are made in the far east too but they spend a lot of money on R&D and developing their own kit like the new VCLS seat post, rather than just taking an existing design frame asnd rebadging it. None of Canyons frames are open mould
That's pretty much what I thought, I'm sure on the German cycling websites they aren't recommending Planet X as the 'go to' value for money brand.I've never really considered a Canyon before, however the latest Ultimate CF SLX is rather lovely.
Some of the early PX carbon stuff might have been generic, now a lot is to their own spec/design. Get over to Rotherham and have a look in the showroom for yourself, I'm guessing you've never seen one to actually judge on the quality.
Canyon is a big brand in Germany so the mags will favour them, PX has no presence in Germany.

There are plenty of things I like about PX, the bikes however don't do a lot for me, from a perceived technical viewpoint and also aesthetically.

Not sure that Planet-X's stuff is 'open mold' - if by that you mean that they pick a frame from a manufacturer's catalogue and stick their logo on it. They employ some pretty able frame designers and as I understand it some elements of some of their frames have appeared elsewhere because they've traded the rights for a lower delivered cost.
I also imagine they're rather smaller than Canyon.

Which you could argue encompasses the fact they supply a World Tour team, appear in 'superbike' tests within magazines and for a any given 'What £3k bike should I buy?' thread it is likley Canyon will appear as a recommendation whereas it's unlikley that PX/Ribble et al. will be mentioned.

Nothing much wrong with any of them but I think Canyon trumps Planet X. I'd rather have an alu Canyon than a Planet X.

I have one too, and absolutely love it. I'm just relieved that I'm so slow on a pushbike that I won't have the embarrassment of having to ride it in a world tour event. Strikes me that they are giving a good product that will satisfy most people most of the time at a reasonable price.

Nowt wrong with either. If racing is to be used as a measure, how many club/regional/national TTs, triathlons and road races have been won on Planet Xs? Lots, i'm guessing.
Canyon are big. Very big. They've Planet Xs sales method, but with the clout/tech up there (if maybe not quite as much) as Giant, Merida etc, etc.
