I did my good deed of the day last night. Going home last night I spied a woman pushing her bike so I stopped and asked if everything was OK. Turns out she'd punctured miles away from home, with no way to repair it and had already walked 6 miles before I found her. It was her first ride for ~ 20 years and she was thoroughly pissed off. She'd had loads of people ride past her and nobody had even asked if everything was OK.

I showed her how to repair the puncture and gave her a few self adhesive patches in case it happened again (she had a pump...). Now Karma is rewarding me by making it rain for my journey home. Ah well, at least I'm not sitting in traffic!

So, would you have stopped, or ridden past?

Well done - I'd have stopped too. Always do if I come across another cyclist stopped at the side of the road - just ask if they're OK. All so far have been, but I figure it costs nothing to slow for a few seconds to make sure.

I also punctured on my first ride out - ended up walking 2.5 miles home, so not too bad. That was the first and last time I went out without a repair kit biggrin.

Nice one mate, I always try and stop, saw a guy pushing a flat tyre the other day, felt guilty for not stopping, but was doing 35+ down a hill, still I should have stopped

Remember once a guy in a pick up gave me a lift home 5+ mile after I bent a wheel

Seriously, good work. Karma is outweighed by Sod's Law though. You will get a puncture and find you've given all your patches away now!

Yup, I have stopped a couple of times in the past and even gave away my spare tube when a chap had shredded his near Henley last year.

Not too sure about karma though, I am a reasonably nice chap who will always help others but only every seem to be crapped on!!

Good stuff.

If I see someone pushing a bike with a flat I’ll offer some assistance. From memory the last few people I’ve seen though have been in the process of fixing things rather than walking their bikes.

I saw someone (a nurse I think judging by her get up) quickly flat the other day outside the shop I was in, by the time I’d paid and got outside, the bike was upside down with the wheel off, a dual cylinder foot pump! had come out of the panniers and everything was clearly being taken care of. So regardless of who it is, especially if female though, I’ll ask if they’ve got everything they need rather than if they need a hand in case it comes across as being patronising. I’ve been there myself with all the right equipment to fix a tyre yet by the time my wheel has come off the bike, the tyre has come off the rim and the tube is ready to be sorted I’ve only then realised the rubber glue had gone solid in the tube (I’ve long since moved to self-adhesive patches).

I always ask "got every thing you need?" when I see another rider stopped, but I'm a MTB'er and we ALWAYS ask when we see another rider stopped wink

Mountain bikers will use any excuse to stop though, I've known people who will suddenly stop on steep climbs because they think they saw an eagle/rare flower/endangered newt... wink

I've had people stop for me, both out on a casual cycle and even in a race. I always ask people if they need any help.

Yep, I'd stop. One guy once did it for me on the road between Beaulieu and Ipley when I was without anything to fix my bike (I'd left my saddle bag at home)

I have GOT to remember that one, imaginary technicals are getting harder to pull off.

I am the last man standing in my group in regards to 'stupid uppy, downy seatposts' though, gives me ample excuses to take 5 before a climb or when I inevitably get my arse handed to me on a fast bit.

I work on the understanding that Sod's Law will getcha every time, so I have adhesive patches, spare adhesive patches (or at least I did...) and a spare tube. So unless I ride through a minefield, I should be OK.

Probably.

Hopefully.

Oh dear, I'm going to be walking home when my chain snaps or something, aren't I?

Always carry a chain tool. I've fixed more chains than punctures recently (other peoples, not my own).

I carry a little tool kit, pump and first aid stuff. Only ever needed it once but it's always better to have something and not need it than want something you haven't got. smile

First aid is a good shout, worth sticking in my rucksack for commuting
