saving my bike from the bin.

So, the parents are clearing out their garage and have asked if I want my old bike or if they should bin it.

Its probably been sat unused for 4 years.

Its a Giant Rincon and was fabulous pre driving licence. I would guess its a 2003 / 2004 model.

Trouble is that the back wheel is badly buckled. So much so the LBS couldnt fix it, which is probably why I stopped using it!

Thing is..I dont have a clue how to fix / replace the back wheel, or where to start. Id like to get this back on the road for 3 months, if I use it then ill buy a new one!

What would I need to replace the back wheel? I assume I can just slide my gears onto a new wheel?

How much are we looking?

New back wheel and new hub, I would of thought under £100

New pair of wheels for £85-90 or rear only for £50, just depends if its rim or disc brake. You can swop the cassette over but you'll need sprocket remover, a shop should do it for you there and then for a fiver if you go early in the morning.

As long as you are not looking for a branded wheel you could pick up a 26" MTB rear wheel on eBay for under £20, then take it along to your LBS and get them to swaps the cassette - should be able to get it back on the road for less than £30.

Where are you? I have a lot of spares in my workshop and may have a suitable wheel to get the bike back on the road.

On second thoughts, if I just get a new bike (probably 2nd hand / not very good) for about 200 / 300 £ and take it from there...what kind of bike would I be looking for?

I think I would prefer a mountain bike style...hard tail, city tyres?

Hardtail MTB wih city tyres - So a hybrid. Plenty of choice as it's quite a popular market, Decathlon and Halfords do reasonable bikes in this area for your budget (some for less money). The B'Twin bikes stocked at Decathlon look very good for the money.
