I think the heat is slowly taking its toll on me. Obviously sweating quite a lot and by the end of the ride by body is definitely in need of 'something' although I'm not sure what it is. I have tried water, orange squash / ribena (ie soe, thing a bit sugary) , electrolyte tablet things, bananas, homemade chocolate milkshakes but there is a definite chemical imbalance in my body. Can anyone suggest what I might be missing?

A combination of the need for water, salt/electrolytes and food, IME! A potent combination.

Beer is said to be a remarkably good "recovery" drink too. Huzzah!

Usually crisps, Cadbury's Boost and an orange juice. Fat, salty and sugary.

Apparently a boggo standard chocolate milkshake is very good.

if going on really long rides i'll down some SIS rego recovery but i just think a decent meal is good. If i've not got something cooked already i'll have something like a big bowl of porridge, shredded wheat or whatever with some fresh fruit to replace some carbs and protein.....one of the main factors is getting the food down you ASAP after finishing.

No good waiting 1-2 hours after until you eat something....ideally within 20mins of finishing but i usually have at least something almost immediately.

I tried tonnes of sis stuff. Rego night is good for errrrrr night time (though it tastes foul) but I stick to semi-skimmed milk for post ride as I use high5 tablets when actually riding so I dont feel dehydrated when finished

High5 protein recovery, mixed with semi-skimmed milk, it's spot on, working legs the next day. That and some oat/nut butter cookies homemade so no added gunk.

Semi skimmed milk with a couple of spoonfuls of Nesquick (other brands of milkshake are available), and half a bottle of tonic water (quinine helps keep cramps at bay).

Personally I find it hard to eat for the first hour after riding, just don't have the appetite. Give it an hour or so and I would eat a scabby horse!

thanks for all the replies.

it's interesting about the chocolate milkshakes. that seemed to have the best effect on my body out of everything. i made it with a banana, a small scoop of vanilla ice cream, half a desert spoon of bournville chocolate powder and topped up with skimmed milk. then blended all together in all i made up a pint of the stuff.

the mistake i made was downing it way too quickly, then feeling bloated and sick within seconds.

i've since heard eggs are also a good recovery food - don't know if this is true or not. i'll try it next time!

Then drink it whilst still in your jersey!

I had today off work at did a bit over 77 miles. Had a 50g portion of rego recovery as soon as I got back (within 2mins) and then 1 hour later I ate some pasta with tuna, chopped tomatoes, half a red and half a green pepper, half an onion and courgette. Healthy biggrin

+2 (or whatever) for chocolate milk. Mammals don't bother producing it for sts and giggles (well they don't produce the chocolate, but you know what I mean). Although electrolyte stuff is better for pure hydration.

Chocolate shake, generic sandwhich, ice cream, pint of cider, BBQ, cider, more BBQ, cider and repeat...

Oh and all low fat so I can loose weight and ride uphill ;-)

I keep banana chunks in the freezer and blend them up with milk and chocolate milkshake powder.

Quite good for making instant ice-cream too if you add more chunks.

Torq recovery was one of the best purpose made recovery products I had tried. I used to take Powerbar protein shakes after a ride but my legs still hurt like hell in the morning, whereas with the Torq they felt normal.

Milk is about the best thing you can drink after a ride. It has exactly the right balance of what you need.

Personally I go for beer, or larger if I've really been pushing. Although the days of Vokda-Coke in the cammelback are well gone.

It's the protein in the milk that matters. Chocolate just tastes nice.
