I have a recent Cotic Soul 3 fairly blinged up and am trying to trace the source of a creak - it's a maddening constant noise that happens with or without pedal loading, on and off the saddle. In my quest to stop it, I checked my skewers in case they needed a spruce up - imagine my suprise when the end 1/2 inch of the rear one was fairly severely bent! I do very few jumps and at 11 stone, am light - I'm hard on drivetrains but can't see how this happened!

Anyway a suggestion is that the bent skewer may have damaged to rear (Hope Pro2) hub so I'm going to try a spare rear wheel. So far I've bought a new seatpost binder (swapped a useless Hope for a Salsa) and rear skewer but STILL not found out what it is - ARRRGHHHHHH!!!!!

Extremely small chance it's the headset - also Hope...

Sounds like the rear hub to me as you suspect.

Have to say, Hope Pro2s are nowhere near as durable as I'd hoped (!). Already got through two sets of bearings and killed all but one pawl simply disintegrated after a short time.

New hub suggestions anyone?!

Before you spend a lot of money on a new hub and wheel rebuild, have you tried the hope 10mm bolt up conversion kit;

http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?Mod...

These will fit in a standard dropout but makes it much stiffer. You just need to ensure you have a 6mm hex key with you to undo it.

I'm over 100Kg and have Pro2's on the back of both of my bikes with no issues. The one on the FS has done several trips to the Alps, 7stanes, occasional DH run with no issues.

This looks useful! I tried another wheel; no creak so pretty sure it's the hub - did a partial strip and stuck tonnes of grease over everything - just did a very short pootle down the road and I may have sorted it - if not, I'll give that a go - cheers!

Forgot to add, try a thin smear of grease over the end of the axle where it meets the frame. I don't get it with the bolt ups but friends with QR's get creaks there and this always solves it.

Found this out when i spent months chasing a creak on my bike, after replacing nearly every bearing I chucked it into my local LBS for a service and asked them to sort it. The owner gave a knowing smile, said this was probably the problem, and cured it in seconds....

Oh woe - got a new XT skewer (after spending more on XTR appeared pointless), partially stripped the Pro2 hub. greased everything to within an inch of it's life; still creaking!

It sort of sounds like the front end - headset or forks (RS SIDs). The hunt continues...

I might get the rear hub serviced just in case but it's not easy to do 'ere in Cornwall!
