Up until a month ago I was in the best shape of my life and cycling more than I've ever done. I was all ready to take part in La Marmotte but unfortunately crashed while mountain biking in Morzine just 4 days before the event.

I spent 3 weeks in a French hospital due to internal injuries to the liver and right kidney. I was advised not to exercise for 3 months but swimming was OK. I asked about using a turbo trainer and was told this was fine too - essentially no exercise that could lead to any knocks to the body.

I was doing 2 or 3 turbo sessions per week since the start of the year - mostly 2x20. Can anyone advise how best to maintain my fitness over the next 3 months using a variety of sessions? Obviously my long distance endurance is going to suffer - I was doing weekend rides of about 5 hours and don't have the will power to replicate that on a turbo!

Thanks

Eddh

Sorry to hear about your injury's mate, sign up to this.

Its about £6 per month. They have a few 10 week plans. Works with iplayer, netflix, sufferfest vids etc so you can watch something if you do get bored.

+1

I tore a ligament I my thumb earlier in the year necessitating nearly 2 months off the bike (outside at least!). TrainerRoad came to my rescue and I was fitter when eventually I could go out again. TrainerRoad + Sufferfest = get a bucket wink

Sorry to hear you missed the Marmotte. If it's any consolation, it was hellish. Literally - the Galibier and the Alpe were like riding in an inferno.

Turbos. Hmm. 2x20 is fine, but won't maintain your endurance. For that there is no sub for time in the saddle. I'd suggest installing the turbo smack in front of a TV, get a box set, select "Play all" and aim to watch a disc at a time. However, do your riding by HR limits - set yourself a max HR and don't exceed it.

If you've got access to one of the Tacx fancy turbos with variable resistance and a computer, long turbo sessions can be more tolerable. I did a madly long session last weekend on the IM Canada course, which was ok.

I've been looking at the Wahoo Kicker but can't convince myself (even using man maths) that it's worth a grand. I do think there will be some excellent software released over the next few years though. I really like the idea of measuring power being a technical person (some would say geek).
