Portugal-Costa Prata area road cycling

I'm off on hols next week to the Silver Coast of Portugal, been many times before, staying south of Peniche. I'm training for IM Wales so taking road bike and all the assorted other crap a family of 4 takes.
Anyway, has anyone cycled this area before? I am aware that the Portugeezers aren't exactly renowned for road safety which is a concern but has anyone any other recommendations or observations to make?
I've planned a few routes on ridewithgps.com some nice hilly coast roads alongside the Atlantic north of Obidos and I've tried to make contact with local cycle clubs but they all seem to be MTBers, the local Triathlon club has basically ended for the summer as well!
