Yet another "more gear" question
Discussion
A few things I'm interested in getting but would like advice....
What do you guys wear when it's around 15-20deg outside but is raining? I've got a thin-ish goretex jacket but it's a bit too warm for now (it's totally wind and waterproof with taped seams) so I guess I'm after a really thin water resistant jacket.... What about the gilets? Any good at keeping the core dry-ish?
Secondly, I've heard that some baselayers help with keeping you cool.... For example if I wear that goretex jacket in warmer weather with just a summer jersey underneath I can "boil in the bag", do some baselayers help keep you cooler? If so, any recommendations?
I've got a few baselayers but these are all aimed at keeping me warmer rather than the other way around!
Thanks

Baselayers help you remain cooler IME, but nothing will stop you cooking in a goretex jacket. The heat and water can't escape through said jacket fast enough/at all (all "breathable and waterproof" claims are utter bWhat do you guys wear when it's around 15-20deg outside but is raining? ks).Don't think I'll bother with more baselayers until next summer. Already got a few for winter.
Think I'm going to order a dhb ultralight gilet which I can use with a thin jersey underneath and arm warmers, that way, I can easily remove the gilet or arm warmers if I get too warm. That's a more versatile set up than wearing a long sleeve baselayer underneath a jersey.
Also going to get me some knee Warmers, already got some leg warmers but don't need them just yet.
I never used to understand the point in things like arm and leg warmers because I thought leggings or a long sleeve top would do the job, but now seeing the added versatility they give you they're bloody brilliant.

If it's around 15-20 and raining I liberally apply myself in #5 and go out regardless, at that temp for me it doesn't make a great deal of difference adding a waterproof layer although I wouldn't go out for more than 60mins. I do have a very lightweight windproof Campagnolo gilet which is very good good at keeping the chill out and it effective in the wet.

Rain and summer. Rule 5. Just get on with it. You'll soon dry off. Shorts and jersey will do the job. Base layers for winter no real need in the summer.
ok maybe i got the temp wrong.....rather for something nearer 10-12 degrees or so really.....this is the jacket i currently have

Suck it up in the summer, as you would for running IMO.this is the jacket i currently have

In winter, I try to keep my core warm and relatively dry and worry less about the legs/arms (although keeping fingers and toes warm can be tough).
A windstopper gillet will probably be my next purchase as boil-in-the-bag wasn't much fun last winter.

i don't usually dig "hi-viz yellow" but i haven't got any hi visibility gear so went for it in hi-viz colour. seems to get good reviews

also some of these

i've got the nanoflex 3/4 bib tights already and they're chuffing magic....a bit too warm for this time of the year so summer shorts with these over my knees would be a good compromise i think, especially when it's cold in the mornings but not in the afternoons/evenings when i certainly wouldn't want the thicker 3/4 lengths!
i've got some similar thickness full leg warmers and arm warmers already.
i generally don't mind getting wet when running (though staying dry is far more preferable!) because you generate a lot more heat AND there is less windchill, but on the bike i'd rather keep my core dry at least if possible. i'm very thin and seriously struggle when it gets chilly, last winter was a real problem for me on the bike (first winter of largely cycling as you know ewen) as i suffer from reynauds disease which doesn't effect me too much when running (mild at most) but cycling it gets to the point i can't even change gear.

I am a total lightweight though.... 5ft 6 and 8stone 10! I really feel the cold but means I don't bake in the summer.

I usually go with gloves and cover the arms first followed by the thermal bib when it gets cold. As I've always got a bath/shower at either end I don't bother with a jacket unless it's for visibility. I sweat so much I get just as wet plus there's added drag with a jacket!
