Sunday afternoon I'm out on the roadie and I catch up with a pelaton. They're quite happy for me to join and we're cruising for a while having a bit of banter when one of them says, "you should shave your legs!".

"Erm, no!" I reply, to which a protest ensues that to be a proper cyclist I should shave my legs.

At which point I decide I've had enough, bid them farewell and leave them trailing behind with no effort on a hill climb.

What the fk is it with cyclist elitism and this shaving legs bullst!?

Their arguments were, "it looks better", "it makes you more streamlined", and it "saves you from infection if you were to come off".

All of which is bullst.

The main reason pro cyclists shave is to make massages more comfortable, however since I don't have those I'm not going to have ladies legs to pretend I'm something I'm not!

This is one of the reasons I ride by myself. I was berated once for riding with Crankbrother eggbeaters (technically MTB pedals), until I pointed out some pros use them as they provide more float. Then came my shoes as they were mountain bike shoes, then my cycle helmet (technically an MTB one), and now my legs.

Fecking boils my piss when people do this. People should just enjoy the sport and either way, I totally destroyed them with my hairy legs so it's not like their silky smooth ones did them any good!

I don't and won't. Makes you more streamlined, give me a break. I see some of these chaps out there on their £2K plus carbon numbers, team kit and lady legs. Cannot believe it makes a jot of difference.

The massage bit I get and attaching a dressing to injurys if you come off is easier with shaved legs but I don't have the massages and I don't fall off.

When I uses to cycle at decent level we shaved our legs as it made it easier to treat inevitable gashes, apply dressings and have stitches. That was off road cross country.

Bit wierd for recreational cyclists to do it tbh

I don't and for even a pretty serious cyclist it means you're a massive pansy.

Also...you caught up and overtook a peloton!? Not sure if it's just me but I'd be jumping through the roof thumbup

I do, mainly as its just the done thing in racing, and its easier to apply embrocation, and it IS easier to clean a wound after if you do fall off. I don't mock people who don't though, each to their own.

I do it, first time out of curiousity and from then on because I enjoy the sensation and because personally I think it looks better.

Aside from having banter with several close gorilla-esque mates I wouldn't dare suggest to anyone else do the same, it's one thing to have an opinion on what someone looks like or wears, it's another thing altogether to let them know about it!

Although I don't think it's confinded to cycling, almost every sport or group I can think of has their own unique 'look', it's all part and parcel of being part of trying to identify yourself with a particular activity.

I had my legs waxed in aid of charity once.

I'd do it again, but because I'm a bit pervy, not because I'm a cyclist.

If I didn't regularly wear shorts for non cycling activities, then I'd consider it because I have fking hairy legs and get massages regularly.

If you raise £1,000 for a kids charity of my choice, I'll happily shave my legs. I'll even get it documented.

Otherwise, never! I once shaved my balls by request of my ex. Never. Ever. Again.

The name comes from a time before then....so it would be so wrong to imply that!

Yes, it is so much easier to pick road surface out of hair-free legs... can't say if it makes a difference speed-wise or not... and I'm in shorts most of the year, bike or no bike...

Oh and I'm a girl!

I don't and never will. There is a guy who I work with and does cycle touring and he shaves his legs. I don't mock him. He does more miles than me and despite riding a condor steel frame weighing 2kg more than my bike, he is probably quicker than me too.

The main reasoning behind it, is because it makes road rash easier to treat. Simples.
