Can I do this? I have a full Shimano 2300 8 speed groupset and want to swap from my 12-25 to a 11-28 cassette to help climb and descend a bit quicker/more easily.

Can I just swap the current HG50 for a SRAM one, assuming mech and chain compatibility. The bike is pretty new so wear isn't an issue.

Yes, they should be a straight swap.

Or just get a Shimano 11-28.

Shimano HG-51 (11-13-15-17-19-21-24-28)

That'll do nicely.

They use the same cassette tool too which is rather handy.

I couldn't find anywhere with the right HG51 available, they all seem to go up to 30.
