Hi,

Been browsing PH for years, but only just stumbled across the cycling page!

I built a single speed bike up last year, just for bombing around town on and commuting, but then got the itch to build something with some gears. Quite fancied having a nice old steel frame with decent modern components.

So i just bought a '78 Mercian Superlight on ebay, and am just getting round to stripping it down ready for a rebuild. I'm looking at buying the Campagnolo Veloce groupset, the thing I don't know, and am hoping someone here may be able to help with, is will the frame take the 9 speed cassette from the groupset? (the wheels I have are Mavic Open Sports 700c).

I don't think the Veloce brakes will fit as the drop is too long for them, so I'll source something else. Will I have any problem fitting the rest of that groupset to this frame?

Cheers all!

Assuming the rear dropout spacing is 130mm you can fit whatever speed cassette you like, it's more a variable as to what the rear wheel is dished for so the cassette will fit on the freehub. If you have modern wheels you can have upto 11 speed.

As for long drop brakes, Campy haven't sold any for years. Miche do a set and so do Tektro. I have a pair of Tektro 57mm sitting in my parts bin here unused (in silver), you can have them for a tenner plus postage if you like.

welcome

suspect if the frame is from 1978 the rear spacing will be 126mm or 5inch unless its been reset.

5 speed was as numerous for blocks as it got back then.... and down tube or cyclo-x bar-end shifters of course
ultra6 came out in the very early 80s which I used and I remember being asked what are you gonna do with that extra 6th gear lad

Thanks for the info guys.

I measured the rear spacing and it appears to be 130mm. It's currently running a 6 speed cassette, and there is a couple of spacers on the non-drive side, so presumably this will give me the space to run and 8 or 9 speed?

I actually have a set of Tektro R359's from another build that I think will fit, just got to drill out the holes to fit a recessed nut.
