What Bib-Shorts?

I like the Castelli Kiss3 pad as it stays comfy over a good long ride, others have issues with Castelli durability but I havent had any problems.
I have a pair of Cuore Continental shorts from CRC as they were heavily reduced, a bit of a gamble but they have a good pad and are nice and light, ideal for hotter days buit not so much long days though that said, i've done a few centuries in them.
I also have a pair of the original Adidas team Sky bibs which are super comfy but I havent found them again, obviously since Sky switched to Rapha, but I thought the shorts would still be around albeit with different branding.
Might try some Chapeau ones next as they have different pads for different riding positions based on if you spend more time on the drops or the hoods.
I know people who swear by Assos Mille stuff and Rapha gear though, I've just not got £150 to drop on bibs when I know I can get at leats 2 pairs that fit me for the same money.
Take advantage of Wiggle's excellent returns policy, order a few pairs in various sizes as they vary from brand to brand, keep the ones you like, send the rest back!!
Chamois cream is essential, the Elite oxygen stuff is rubbish, Assos is very good

I started with some altura shorts, because they were what was in my LBS when I started.
I since bought some DHB aeron race bibs, which are very comfortable and were pretty good value for money (~£45)
This week I took delivery of some Castelli Velocissimo bibs which were on offer for £75. They look and feel great, the pad (Kiss3) seems excellent. I've not used them in anger yet though.
My next purchase will probably be assos.

Be aware that the Assos cream has menthol in it. My skin does not agree with menthol at all! So an impromptu pre-ride shower was called for when I tried out the Assos cream. I just use boots medicated nappy cream.
Has 2 x pairs of Castelli in recent years, won't buy again. I'm now on Assos Unos for £90 from http://www.assosfactoryoutlet.com/ and couldn't be happier.

+ 1In the past I have used Northwave - a bit on the small side but a good fit to begin with however lose their shape after 6 months or so.
Castelli - good fit and comfy but don't wear well, logo's etc peel off after a couple of washes (even if you turn them inside-out), and they tend to frey around the seams.
Assos is by far and away the best I have tried/used. Not cheap but are extremely comfortable because of the 'click-fit' cut, and wear very well - my shorts have several thousand miles on them with no real signs of wear.....

I default to them every time. The cut is a bit low on the stomach but I only notice that when stood up, obviously in riding position it's fine. Very comfy pad and great grips on the legs.

Another vote for DHB for budget bibs. I got the DHB Pro for about £40 and they are great. Feel a bit odd off the bike but are great once you are on and crouched over.
Can't stop the missus from giggling when i put them on though

I have a pair of Altura Night Visions that I used to use for commuting, they are OK for up to about an hours ride but I find that the pad becomes quite flat. I don't have any DHB's but they do get fantastic reviews....Budget around £50, really like the feel of the Altura I saw in Halfords.. But the dhb ones are mail order, so no chance to have a good feel first.

It all depends which Altura you are looking at though as they don't all use the same pads 
EDIT: Just seen above you said Pro Gel. The Pro Gel uses a more advanced pad than the Night Visions that MadDad uses so I doubt you will experience pad flattening after an hour. I used to use Pro Gels before I got the ones above and never had any comfort issues.
With regards to weather I have leg warmers that come out to play when the temperature drops. Saves having to buy shorts and tights.
