Cycling clubs in Essex

I'm looking at getting involved with a local cycling club (roadie) near Chelmsford.

Just wondering if there are any PH'ers local to me that are members of local clubs and can recommend?

Few options ... Could Try, Chelmer Cycling Club (very old school Roadie) , However for social group rides and to meet some fun fellow riders pop in http://www.athlonsport.co.uk/ Bike Shop .

Used to ride for ShaftesburyCC in Mount Nessing a few years ago which is only a short ride away from Chelmsford - really nice bunch and used to run several races and time trials throughout the year (inc evening 10s)

I lived just off Navigation Road for 2 years and didn't know that was there!!

Is it quite new?

I hear very good things about Chelmer and Shaftesbury, but Shaftesbury have a club bungalow. I think that's got to be the decider, hasn't it?

Your Local clubs like you Chelmers / Shaftesbury / Essex Roads etc are all really enjoying club growth at the moment in the middle of this cycling Boom we are all seeing . All would welcome you as a new member but fundamentally they are still quite old school in the world of cycling, Not much wrong with that , if its Club Evening 10's , Sunday Club runs and plenty of social nights you cant go wrong.

Athlonsport has been open about 1 year now so is quite new . . Sells some very nice kit aimed at the serious rider. Good guys as well.

Because I moved - if I came back I would definitely rejoin Shaftesbury. And yes they do indeed have a bungalow which is only a short walk from a lovely pub. The downside is this has lead to several below par time trial and race performances the following sunday morning.

I did audaxes in the area; lots of good riders from both clubs with positive things to say. Living in Yorkshire, so being a member wouldn't make sense.

My club is obviously better than both, as we have a clubhouse with a library, a lecture room, and accomodation, and our patron is Lizzie Armitstead.

I used to ride for Team Haverhill back in the early 90's. There were some really friendly clubs within Essex Division - Glendene, Chelmer, Romford, but I suppose they might have changed now. Best thing is to probably find out when they go out for a ride and tag along. Get a feel for it and if you like it, job done. If not, move on to the next one.

Prior to moving away, I rode with the Essex Roads lot a couple of times. Friendly enough bunch
