Rear hanger problem

I changed my wheels, cassette and chain last month on my road bike and since then my chain is extremely loose and when in the granny ring, it doesn't go into the largest ring on the rear cassette, as the wheels on the derailleur are catching on the teeth on the cassette. Still in the granny ring at the front, when moving towards the smaller cogs on the rear cassette the chain hangs loose and the derailleur is horizontal.

I haven't changed the gearing on the wheel and the chain I put on was a 114 link. My bike has Sora 9 speed derailleur with a triple on the front.

I am doing a sportive on Saturday and the problem only came to light on Tuesday as this was the first time I have used the bike for a few weeks, as I have been using my everyday hack instead of the road bike.

Does anyone know what the problem is and a possible solution.

Did you shorten the chain, or just throw it on out of the box?

Threw it on out of the box.

Is 114 a standard size for a 9 speed or does it need to be shortened?

I have spare links and a splitter so no problems if that is the case

Think you've found the problem then! Have you still got the old chain? Use the same length of chain as the old one - problem solved!

Don't have the old chain, but I will start taking links out one at a time until it sits right.

Easy to set chain length:

Break the chain
Unthread from rear derailleur
Run the chain over the biggest sprocket on the cassette and the biggest chainring.
The two ends should overlap by 2 links
