Annoying Rattle from handlebars...

My old Raleight racer has a rattle on the handlebars when moving...doesnt affect steering etc as far as I can tell - more annoying than anything.

Any ideas whats needed to stop the rattle ? Googling seems to imply its the headset area, so would the bearings be the cause of the rattle ?

if so, how difficult is it to sort/replace ?

Plenty of possibilities at the front.. bars / stem bolts loose / cables tapping against each other or the forks moving back and forth if the headset bearings are knackered.

Headset bearings can be checked by applying the front brake when astride the bike and rocking the bike back and forwards. Play indicates bearings either dead or in need of adjustment - where you go from there depends on what type of headset you have.

bike is raleigh volant from 1990 ish so I guess threaded headset?

No play/movement at all - and noise only heard when only an issue at higher speed /rough ground. I dont think I want to take headset apart so will check brakes/cables etc.

Take the end caps off, and give it a shake. There's something sitting inside the tube of the handlebars behind the bar-end caps.
